GMC Sierra Recalled For Detaching Roof Rail Airbag Inflator End Caps

General Motors is recalling certain units of the GMC Sierra 1500, 2500, and 3500 pickup trucks in response to a potential issue with the roof-rail airbag (RRAB) inflators. Affected units may be equipped with RRAB inflators that could allow compressed gas to rapidly escape, propelling the end cap or fragments into the cabin, potentially leading to injury.

The problem: According to GM and documents submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), affected models may be equipped with a left or right-side RRAB inflator that could detach the module end cap or experience a rupture in the sidewall.

The hazards: If the RRAB inflator module end cap detaches or the airbag sidewall is ruptured, compressed gas may rapidly escape, propelling the end cap or fragments into the cabin, potentially leading to injury. Notably, this defect can occur even when the vehicle is parked and unoccupied without a crash or airbag deployment.

The fix: GM will replace the left and right RRAB modules in all affected vehicles free of charge.

Affected components: The inflators in question were sourced from a Tier 1 supplier called Key Safety Systems, now known as Joyson Safety Systems. GM has traced the defect to a specific inflator lot and has emphasized that vehicles equipped with parts from outside this suspect batch are not affected.

Affected vehicles:

  • 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 (490 units)
  • 2019 GMC Sierra 2500 (130 units)
  • 2019 GMC Sierra 3500 (45 units)

Number of affected vehicles: A total of 1,658 units across the GMC Sierra and Chevy Silverado lineups are affected by this recall, specifically Crew Cab model variants. Regular Cab and Double Cab models are not included in this particular campaign, as the affected inflator parts were only used in Crew Cab production over a short window in September of the 2018 calendar year.

Owners should: Dealers were notified of this recall on June 25th, 2025, and owner notification letters are scheduled to go out starting August 11th, 2025. Owners may contact GMC customer service for more information using the phone number listed below.
