GM has issued a recall for certain units of the Chevy Silverado 1500, 2500, and 3500 pickup. The new safety recall is in response to a defect affecting the trucks’ roof-rail airbag (RRAB) inflators, which may allow compressed gas to rapidly escape and propel airbag canister fragments or the end cap into the cabin, potentially leading to injury or a crash.
The problem: Affected models may be equipped with a left or right-side RRAB inflator that could have a sidewall rupture, or detach the module end cap.
The hazards: In the event an airbag end cap detaches or the sidewall is ruptured, compressed gas may propel the end cap or fragments of the airbag into the cabin, potentially leading to injury or a crash. Notably, this defect can occur even when the vehicle is parked and unoccupied without a crash or airbag deployment, as confirmed by an incident that occurred this past May involving a 2018 Silverado.
The fix: GM is instructing dealers to replace both the right and left RRAB modules in all affected vehicles. Customers will receive this fix free of charge.
Affected components: GM has traced the defect to a specific inflator lot sourced from a Tier 1 supplier called Key Safety Systems, now known as Joyson Safety Systems. GM states that vehicles equipped with parts from outside this suspected batch of inflators are not affected by this recall.
Affected vehicles:
- 2018 Chevy Silverado 1500 (693 units)
- 2019 Chevy Silverado 2500 (263 units)
- 2019 Chevy Silverado 3500 (37 units)
Number of affected vehicles: A total of 1,658 units across the GMC Sierra and Chevy Silverado lineups are impacted by this recall. The recall only targets vehicles in the Crew Cab body style, while Regular Cab and Double Cab models are not impacted. The affected inflator parts were only used in Crew Cab models during a production window in September of 2018.
Owners should: GM began notifying dealers on June 25th, 2025, while owner notification letters are expected to go out in August. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service for more information.
