The GMC Sierra is built with capability at its core, and for drivers who regularly tackle towing and hauling duties, Tow/Haul mode can be a critical onboard feature. Now GM Authority is taking a closer look at Tow/Haul mode for the GMC Sierra.
Essentially, Tow/Haul mode is a selectable drive mode that tailors the truck’s onboard systems to handle weighty tasks with greater confidence and control. This mode is available for both the GMC Sierra 1500 and Sierra HD.
When activated, Tow/Haul mode modifies the vehicle’s transmission behavior, optimizing shift points to reduce gear hunting and deliver more consistent power under load. The result is smoother acceleration and better throttle response when hauling trailers or carrying heavy payloads. In some trims, this mode may also recalibrate steering and engage trailer sway control, helping to stabilize the truck and trailer.
Tow/Haul mode remains active for up to four hours after the truck is shut off, automatically reverting to Normal mode after the four hours is up. On diesel-equipped models, Tow/Haul mode also engages exhaust braking, which uses downshifting and the turbocharger to help slow the vehicle, reducing brake wear over long downhill descents.
Drivers can tailor their truck’s performance even further by using Manual Mode or Electronic Range Select, which disables the automatic braking feature and allows manual gear range selection. Additionally, the Automatic Engine Start/Stop system is disabled when Tow/Haul mode is active.
As for specifics on the capability numbers, the 2025 GMC Sierra 1500 can achieve a maximum conventional tow rating of 13,200 pounds with the 3.0L I6 LZ0 turbodiesel Duramax engine, Double Cab / Standard Bed body configuration, rear-wheel drive, and Max Trailering Package (RPO code NHT). The heavy-duty Sierra 3500 HD leads the lineup with a gooseneck towing capacity of up to 36,000 pounds when configured as a Regular Cab Long Bed dual rear-wheel (DRW) truck with 2WD and the Max Trailering package.
With regard to payload numbers, the Sierra 1500 tops out at 2,230 pounds in the Regular Cab 2WD configuration. Meanwhile, the 2025 Sierra 3500 HD equipped with the 6.6L V8 L8T gasoline engine, DRW, and rear-wheel drive can haul up to 7,290 pounds in the bed.

Someone did not research which boat brand to picture with the GMC in the main image for this article. That particular boat has a Ford in it. 🙁
sooo, Gm is towing a Ford. Where is the problem???
Is the tow haul mode not discontinued, and now you just need to select trailer botton?
