In addition to the crossover’s new all-electric variant for the region, General Motors is also planning the upcoming Chevy Captiva PHEV for South America.
The automaker’s South American subsidiary is considering the introducing of the Chevy Captiva PHEV in select countries, notably where Chevrolet’s new global model based on the China-made Wuling Starlight S has already been announced. As such, a plug-in hybrid variant of the Chevy Captiva planned for South America and may be announced soon.
This was confirmed by GM South America Vice President Fabio Rua in conversations with several regional media outlets during a special international press event in Detroit. The executive made it clear that, in addition to the officially announced Captiva EV, the upcoming Chevy Captiva PHEV is part of the brand’s future product strategy for the South American market, where Chevrolet will expand its offering of models with electrified powertrains.
In particular, the upcoming Chevy Captiva PHEV is confirmed by GM as an option to complement the new electrified Captiva’s range below the fully electric variant – especially in South American countries that don’t yet have sufficient EV charging infrastructure. The Captiva PHEV is also being evaluated for markets with tax benefits for entry-level electrified vehicles, such as Argentina.
Technically, the Chevy Captiva PHEV is expected to use the same powertrain that the Starlight S PHEV already offers in China, consisting of a naturally aspirated 1.5L Atkinson-cycle engine in conjunction with an electric motor, generating a combined 150 kW or 201 hp and 310 Nm or 228 pound-feet of torque. This plug-in hybrid system is fed by a 20.5 kWh battery that provides an electric-only range of up to 130 km or 80.8 miles and a combined range of over 1,100 km or 684 miles.
The upcoming Chevy Captiva PHEV is planned as one of Chevrolet’s future products in South America and could be officially announced in the coming months in some country in the region, with Argentina being the most likely to receive it. This new version of the Captiva could also be launched and sold simultaneously in countries where the all-electric model is introduced, giving customers more options.
