Trump Suggests Further Raising Import Tariffs After GM Plant Investment Announcement

Bloomberg reports that President Donald Trump recently remarked on the GM decision to invest $4 billion in U.S. manufacturing, citing the move as a benefit of the administration’s controversial trade agenda. Although reciprocal tariffs with individual countries are in flux, pending negotiations, the 25-percent tariff on cars imported to the U.S. remains. The president is considering going even higher to continue encouraging domestic manufacturing.

“I might go up with that tariff in the not-too-distant future. The higher you go, the more likely it is they build a plant here,” Trump said.

Another recent example of automakers making new investments in U.S. manufacturing is BMW. Wards Auto reported last week on a $1.7-billion investment into the German automaker’s South Carolina manufacturing operation to expand production of crossovers and their forthcoming electric variants.

GM’s recent announcement specifically applies to three plants: Orion Assembly in Michigan, Fairfax Assembly in Kansas, and Spring Hill Manufacturing in Tennessee. Orion Assembly will produce the next generation of full-size trucks and SUVs, Fairfax will build the ICE-powered Chevy Equinox, the next-gen Chevy Bolt EV, and thus-unnamed affordable EVs, and Spring Hill will be home to a refreshed or redesigned ICE-powered Chevy Blazer.

Meanwhile, BT1-based vehicles, including the Cadillac Escalade IQ, Cadillac Escalade IQL, Chevy Silverado EV, GMC Sierra EV and GMC Hummer EV will be exclusively built at Factory Zero plant in Detroit. The original plan was to produce more BT1-based electric pickup trucks at the Orion facility, which is pivoting back to ICE production.

“We believe the future of transportation will be driven by American innovation and manufacturing expertise,” GM CEO Mary Barra said of the investment. “[Tuesday’s] announcement demonstrates our ongoing commitment to build vehicles in the U.S. and to support American jobs. We’re focused on giving customers choice and offering a broad range of vehicles they love.”

As for the tariff situation, we will continue to report the latest as it evolves and the new investments that come with it.

  1. Was it not Mary’s predecessors who were so proud of the extra profit made by sub-ING out production to second class countries where labor is so cheap. Where will she get workers to work for minimum wage here.

  3. Maybe it wasn’t such a good idea appealing to a fascist dictator?? They spent millions supporting the RNC and this man’s inauguration fund. They’re keeping the Blazer around and moving production to the US. So clearly it’s not about bringing back manufacturing. Maybe GM just needs to stop cuddling up to fascists like Trump

      1. Fascism is a far-right, authoritarian, and ultranationalist political ideology and movement characterized by a dictatorial leader, centralized autocracy, militarism, and forcible suppression of opposition. It often involves a cult of personality around the leader, a disregard for human rights, and a strong emphasis on national unity and purity. Fascism is known for its use of propaganda, violence, and intimidation to maintain power. What part of this isn’t what is currently happening in the US?

        1. Interesting how nearly 80 million Americans voted for President Trump and a majority today continue to approve of his policies. In fact, even CNN continues to report how his Administration’s actions have higher approval in their polls vs the Democrats.

          1. You are correct. But that doesn’t mean he’s not acting like a Fascist. Many Fascists have strong followings. As do dictators and cult leaders. Still doesn’t mean he isn’t a Fascist.

          4. Trump’s approval rating is 38% and Biden’s was 50% at this same point 4 years ago. Let’s not get on the internet lying, okay? And just because 80 million morons are just as evil and stupid as he is doesn’t make him any less of a fascist. These tariffs only cause harm to Americans and businesses and they clearly permeate any deal the US creates (see UK and China) and they aren’t creating jobs.

        5. My grandfather lived under a fascist regime. Namely Mussolini regime. Trumps presidency doesn’t even come close to what it was like under Mussolini. But nice try.

  4. One step at a time. You issued your tariffs now add incentives to manufacture at home and purchase American. Honestly, I would rather see my tax dollars go to this than things like “voter turnout in India $21 million” or “gender changes and LGBT activism in Guatemala -$2 million” or even “tourism in Egypt-$6 million” to name a few. That is money that should be going to our own industries and people.

    1. It is not tax dollars that are incentivizing GM investment.

      1. No but tax dollars indirectly contribute to say a tax credit on the interest paid on a car payment on a US made vehicle. Or tax subsidies for building in the US.

    1. Sit down because this may shock you but the vast overwhelming majority of the planet is anti-Trump including the United States. 2/3s of the country think he’s doing a terrible job and nearly 9/10 of the rest of the world hates him. He only polls extremely well with uneducated Americans. I’m not making this up. The US is being held hostage by morons.
