GM currently has no plans for closures or layoffs at its Mexican manufacturing facilities for the foreseeable future, even as The General prepares to add production of the Chevy Blazer and Chevy Equinox crossovers in the United States starting in 2027.
Earlier this week, General Motors announced a new $4 billion investment to support and expand its U.S. manufacturing footprint over the course of the next two years. The investment will be divided between three U.S. facilities, including Orion Assembly in Michigan, Fairfax Assembly in Kansas, and Spring Hill Manufacturing in Tennessee. Fairfax is set to produce the next-gen Chevy Equinox, while Spring Hill will produce the ICE-based Chevy Blazer.
That said, the ICE-based Chevy Equinox is currently assembled at the General Motors San Luis Potosà plant, while the Blazer is assembled at the GM Ramos Arizpe facility. Both plants are located in Mexico. Although the pair of gasoline-powered crossovers are now slated for production on U.S. assembly lines, Mexico’s Secretary of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard, stated that General Motors will continue to operate its Mexican production facilities without any closures or layoffs. The San Luis Potosà facility is expected to continue production of the ICE-based Equinox in 2027.
At present, the General Motors Ramos Arizpe plant produces the Cadillac Optiq, Chevy Blazer EV, Chevy Equinox EV, Honda Prologue, and ICE-based Chevy Blazer, while the GM San Luis Potosà plant produces the ICE-based Chevy Equinox and GMC Terrain. The GM Silao plant builds the Chevy Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500.
Looking ahead, the new $4 billion investment will support both ICE and EV production in the U.S., with Orion Assembly expected to build full-size SUVs as well as Chevy Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 pickups starting in early 2027. Fairfax Assembly is now set to manufacture the ICE-based Chevy Equinox and next-gen Chevy Bolt EV, while Spring Hill Manufacturing will also produce the ICE-based Chevy Blazer.
“We believe the future of transportation will be driven by American innovation and manufacturing expertise,” said General Motors CEO Mary Barra in conjunction with the latest investment announcement. “Today’s announcement demonstrates our ongoing commitment to build vehicles in the U.S and to support American jobs. We’re focused on giving customers choice and offering a broad range of vehicles they love.”

Much shorter-term, what are GMs plans to accommodate tariffs? Not a single word about that…
Thank you B TCHY29579 . Right G.M. should tell their competators their strategy so they
can counter G.M. strategy. I hope you don*t run a business.
Never suggest dat anyone has the mentality of a FRUIT FLY> Certainly not you. Open to interpretation.
Car companies think years in advance. If they decided today to bring ICE Blazer and Eqnuinox production to the US, it would take a couple of years. It’s not just the car that moves, but also the supply chain. Seat manufacturing, wire harness, rolled steel, and subassemblies. They have contracts with vendors for a specified period or a set product count. Cancelling those contracts could be just as costly as dealing with the tariffs.
I just worry that it’s yet another knee-jerk reaction to the current president-in-office, like the reaction resulting in the design of 20 EVs for Biden’s Mandate, that’s now history and the vehicles don’t sell.
GM was going EV before Biden. They started work on Ultium not long after Trump took office the first time. GM saw Tesla eating their lunch with a couple of models. They also observed developments in China and Europe.
GM is going to sell over 100k+ EVs this year. That’s nothing to laugh at. Especially given that the average transaction price is higher than their gas models.
They sold about 114k in the United States *last* year, plus another 30k in Canada. And Honda sold another 40k that GM built.
With so many new models, I fully expect them to double that this year.
Those will be looking to reshore just as fast or faster than GM.
Don’t forget that cars built in Mexico are sold in places other than just the US.
And they are American as much as the U.S. is, since Mexico is in America.
Hopefully Mexico will keep producing cars, and they’ll be able to sell them domestically. That poor country is so overun by the cartels. That their new car market is the same size as the state of New Jersey. Hopefully they’ll return to prosperity just as we are, and we can make our cars here and they can afford to make and buy new cars there.
Who here is hateful enough to wish Mexico remain poor to down vote that? America first isn’t everyone else last, it’s simply, stop screwing us and focus on building your wealth through honest work. We all wish Mexico well, just without the cartels.
MEXICO gets the jobs but doesnt buy GM vehicles in any numbers. Canada is loosing GM jobs even thought GM is canadas best sellers. its time for Canadians to stop buying GM vehicles!
Well said! I’m Canadian and after decades of buying USA cars I’ll never buy another after the way we have been treated by the USA.
Welcome Alberta as the next 51st state of America!!! And more provinces to follow!
