New Entry-Level 2026 Buick GL8 Legacy Officially Announced

During the local launch event of the refreshed 2026 Buick Electra E5, SAIC-GM also announced the new entry-level 2026 Buick GL8 Legacy in China.

General Motors’ main joint venture in China said it will soon introduce the all-new 2026 Buick GL8 Legacy as the next entry-level variant of Buick’s successful full-size MPV lineup, exclusive to the country. The automaker revealed that it’s gearing up to unveil the 2026 GL8 Legacy during a special event on June 26th in Shanghai.

GL8 LS PHEV

The new 2026 Buick GL8 Legacy is similar to the all-new Buick GL8 LS PHEV just launched in the Chinese market, which uses the same platform and body structure as the previous third-generation GL8, but with new a front and rear appearance inspired by the brand’s Pure Design language. In fact, the 2026 GL8 Legacy can be defined as the base version of the GL8 LS with an exclusive internal combustion powertrain.

Although SAIC-GM only showed a single exterior image of the model in its initial announcement, the new 2026 Buick GL8 Legacy is expected to feature minor trim differences from the GL8 LS PHEV and share the exact same 2+2+3 seating layout as the electrified MPV. Aesthetically, the two variants will differ only in their wheel design, emblems, and color scheme.

Mechanically, the 2026 Buick GL8 Legacy will be powered by the familiar turbocharged 2.0L I4 LSY engine with an output of approximately 233 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, mated to the GM nine-speed automatic transmission. While details have not been revealed, it will likely include a 48V mild-hybrid system. As such, the new model will not fully fall into the new energy vehicle (NEV) category.

The new entry-level 2026 Buick GL8 Legacy will be officially unveiled in China on June 26th and immediately launched in the country’s domestic market, replacing the 15-year-old second-generation GL8 Legacy. Full configuration and trim level details will be revealed during the unveiling event next week.

  1. Looks comfy inside however, ugly outside. This might work as a taxi cab or airport hotel shuttle here. Or a rental car. I can see these swarming around airports and convention halls.

    1. That’s right. Give us a deuce and a quarter with big plushy velour seats and the little AC vent for my private area and I’ll buy one. I want the ‘76 version. Not the Nova knock off version.

  5. Please keep that POS in China and give us back a big, luxury Buick and Cadillac sedan. Enough of the SUV, CUV, Minivan, pickup and EV BS. Not all buyers want that crap.

    1. That’s correct. I had a ‘91 Cavalier RS wagon. It was downright plush compared to the gray box generic interiors today. It even had blue seat belts that matched the different blue colors throughout the car. GM used to make interesting cars. Besides the Corvette or a high end Caddy, what is something that gets one excited?
