Like New 1987 Chevy Camaro IROC-Z Florida Auction Bound

Beginning with the 1985 model year, Chevy Camaro customers could spec their Z/28s with the RPO B4Z IROC (International Race Of Champions) Sport Equipment Package for $659. The package included special front struts and springs, special rear springs, Delco-Bilstein rear shocks, a special rear sway bar, higher-effort power steering, reinforced front frame rails, P245/50VR16 Goodyear Eagle GTs, 16×8-inch aluminum wheels, fog lights, bold IROC-Z graphics on the doors, and IROC-Z badging throughout. The B4Z option would be offered for Z/28s until the 1988 model year when it became its own model. The IROC-Z would sunset after the 1990 model year.

Chevy Camaro IROC-Z performance was quite impressive for the time. When equipped with the 305 cubic-inch LB9 Small Block with Tuned Port Injection, the IROC-Z produced 215 horsepower, could sprint from a dead stop to 60 miles per hour in under seven seconds, the quarter mile in just under 15 seconds, and continue on to a top speed of 135 miles per hour. With the 1987 model year, the IROC-Z could be had with a detuned version of the Corvette L98 350 Small Block that made 225 horsepower, but was only available with the four-speed automatic transmission. If you wanted 95 percent of the Corvette’s performance, for a fraction of the Chevy Corvette price tag, the 1987 Chevy Camaro IROC-Z with the L98 350 wasn’t a bad way to go.

Our feature 1987 Chevy Camaro IROC-Z is highly original, with just 3,044 miles showing on the odometer. Finished in Bright Blue over a black cloth interior, it wears its original Goodyear Eagle GT tires. It is powered by the aforementioned L98 350 Small Block with Tuned Port Injection backed by a four-speed automatic transmission. The Camaro is equipped with power disc brakes, power steering, air conditioning, glass T-tops, AM-FM/cassette stereo with five-band equalizer, power windows, power locks, tinted glass, IROC-Z aluminum wheels, and rear window louvers.

This nearly new 1987 Chevy Camaro IROC-Z will cross the Mecum Auctions block at their Florida Summer Special Friday, July 11th.

    1. True. I prefer the Firebird GTA of this era but both are beautiful. This IROC-Z example especially so. Both the Camaro and Firebird have stood the test of time well with, by today’s standards, simple and clean body surfacing.

      I’m a huge fan of Bill Mitchell and I’ve always thought these cars were some of the first post-Mitchell products but I’ve read recently that they were delayed and were originally designed with the intent to launch a year or so earlier and, thus, Mitchell was involved in their design. Whether or not that’s true, he never failed GM delivering one masterpiece after another.

      1. Agree that Bill Mitchell created and some cases influenced many spectacular GM designs. C2 and 3 Corvette my personal favorites and all others out of the Fisher Body Studio were all real eye pleasers. He retired in 1977, and his design group definitely had a hand in Gen 1 and 2. Whether he influenced Gen 3 is largely uncertain. IMO, he’d s___ can the designers of the C8 Corvette.

  5. This is the car of my halcyon young 20s days. My summer job boss had one of these. His wife told him to treat himself. He told me that when you hit the gas, he got pushed back into his seat. Unfortunately, these days I could never afford this like him. The tarriff taxes are killing me.
