The 1990 Chevy 454 SS was an early example of a muscle pickup truck engineered for on-road performance, and it endures as an icon today among truck enthusiasts. It’s also a symbol of the 1990s, a status that Mattel is celebrating with a special Hot Wheels RLC (Red Line Club) exclusive 1990 Chevy 454 SS model.
This 1:64 model has what Hot Wheels calls a “Spectraflame teal” body color on the ZAMAC-made body and a pattern of aqua, navy, and fuchsia graphics that “create a look so awesome that not even your nicest fanny pack can contain it,” according to the product listing. The windows are lightly smoked and show a black interior.
The truck rides on Real Riders 5-spoke mag wheels, fittingly finished in chrome. The aquamarine color goes beyond just the body and continues on the metal chassis and inside the engine bay. The tailgate really opens, and an opening hood reveals the big block V8 underneath. Mattel describes the 90s-inspired custom truck as “quite simply da bomb.”
Interestingly, this isn’t the first Hot Wheels RLC Exclusive 1990 Chevy 454 SS model. Similar models were offered in 2022 and 2023. The 2022 model had a menacing black and red color scheme, and the 2023 model had a Spectraflame red finish.
The real truck that this toy is based on hails from the GMT400 generation of the Chevy C1500. 1990 was the debut model year for the 454 SS, which came exclusively with a single cab and rear-wheel drive. The muscle truck employed the 7.4L L19 V8, rated at 230 horsepower and 385 pound-feet of torque. For 1990-1991, every 454 SS had black paint and a red interior. For 1992, red and white monochrome exteriors were offered, and so were blue, beige, and gray interiors.
According to Mattel’s website, this model will be offered exclusively for members of the Red Line Club and is priced at $27 per unit. Purchases are limited to two units per club membership. The Chevy 454 SS model is set to launch tomorrow, June 10th, 2025, at 12:00 p.m. ET / 9 a.m. PT.
