Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

During Q1 2025, combined GMC Yukon sales – which include the Yukon and Yukon XL – placed the full-size SUV range in second place in the mainstream full-size SUV segment when ranked by sales volume.

As has been the case for well over two decades now, sales of the Chevy Tahoe and Suburban, the corporate cousins to the Yukon and Yukon XL, respectively, led this space on a combined basis with 43,431 deliveries, up 32 percent, comprised of:

  • 29,827 units of the regular-length Tahoe (see running Chevy Tahoe sales), up 28 percent to place first in the segment, and
  • 13,594 deliveries of the extended-length Suburban (see running Chevy Suburban sales) swelling up 40 percent, placing third.

The Yukon came in second (see running GMC Yukon sales and GMC Yukon XL sales) with a 29 percent swell to 23,324 units. Note that Yukon sales are reported on the same line this quarter.

The Ford Expedition (see running Ford Expedition sales), which includes the regular-length Expedition and extended-length Expedition Max, followed in third as sales fell 37 percent to 13,482 units due to the model year changeover.

The Jeep Wagoneer family, comprised of both the regular-length Wagoneer and longer Wagoneer L (but not including the more luxurious Grand Wagoneer) took fourth with a 60 percent dive to 5,400 units. The Toyota Sequoia placed fifth with a 14 percent drop to 5,107 units, while the Nissan Armada finished out the list with a two percent dip to 3,910 units.

Meanwhile, Tahoe and Suburban sales are reported separately.

Combined, the Tahoe and Suburban duo continue to command the mainstream full-size SUV segment in terms of sales volume, followed by the Yukon and Yukon XL family. Combining the Chevys and GMCs have GM’s full-size SUVs accounting for 66,745 deliveries for a commanding 71 percent segment share, representing nearly three-fourths of all sales in this space and posting a 31 percent jump year-over-year.

The GM Authority Take

Cumulative GMC Yukon sales posted solid gains during Q1 2025, as did GM’s best-selling Chevy Tahoe and Suburban duo. In fact, these models were the only ones to be in the green, combining to give The General a whopping 71 percent share.

We attribute the healthy volume and solid growth to the refreshed Yukon family, which launched late last year as 2025 models. The updates make the Yukon more competitive, with ample supply at the dealer level also being instrumental in the positive results.

But FoMoCo has answered with its redesigned 2025 Ford Expedition, offering features not found in Chevy and GMC SUVs in order to take on The General. Since The Blue Oval’s updated flagship just arrived during Q1 2025, sales are currently impacted by a generational changeover, so time will tell to see if the updated model makes a dent in GM sales.

About GMC Yukon And Yukon XL

The refreshed 2025 GMC Yukon boasts a long list of updates that enhance its design, comfort, and functionality. It’s highlighted by a refreshed exterior, revamped cabin, and cutting-edge tech, including new towing technology.

The updated SUV introduces two new trim levels: Elevation and AT4 Ultimate. The new AT4 Ultimate coincides with the 5th anniversary of the off-road-focused GMC AT4 sub-brand. Much like the GMC Canyon, Acadia, and Terrain, the 2025 GMC Yukon replaces the SLE and SLT trims with Elevation as the new entry-level one, resulting in the Yukon losing this family friendly seating feature.

The exterior of the 2025 Yukon shows off a truck-like attitude, with unique grille patterns and eye-catching animated lighting signatures. The cabin centers around a large, vertical 16.8-inch diagonal Premium GMC Infotainment Center.

The refreshed 2025 Yukon offers several new appearance packages and updated engine availability, but doesn’t offer these three paint colors. Here are the 2025 Yukon paint colors, the interior colorways, and available wheels, plus all the front fascias. However, these three wheels are no longer available to order.

The 2025 Yukon Denali Ultimate also gets a new Executive Second-Row Seating Package, but, inexplicably, the Yukon XL does not.

To that end, for 2025, the GMC Yukon AT4 finally gets a diesel engine option for the first time, featuring the new 3.0L I6 LZ0 turbodiesel Duramax engine, with ordering for that powerplant kicking off on March 3rd. As before, the 2025 Yukon will continue to offer two gasoline engine options: the naturally aspirated 5.3L V8 L84 and naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 L87. Notably, the latter is not offered on the Elevation trim.

  1. Can you say dominance? GM should develop a Defender-inspired model based on the Colorado, featuring a true ZR2 trim across its full-size lineup. With their production volume, this is entirely feasible. A Tahoe or Yukon designed to rival the Land Cruiser or Range Rover would be a game-changer, boasting improved front and rear clearance, rock sliders, larger wheels, and more rugged features. There’s no need for a Suburban variant—just focus on Tahoe and Yukon models. A Cadillac version isn’t necessary either, but GMC could explore Hummer-inspired variants for added appeal.
Additionally, GM should introduce hybrid and diesel options for their mid-size SUVs to compete with Toyota and prioritize bringing manufacturing back to the United States.
