During a special event with Brazilian and South American press in Detroit, General Motors has just confirmed that it will unveil new Chevrolet hybrids next year in Brazil.
A senior executive at the automaker’s South American subsidiary confirmed to regional media that the company will introduce the first Chevrolet hybrids in Brazil during the 2026 calendar year as part of its electrification strategy, which has shifted from a focus on fully electric vehicles to include models equipped with hybrid powertrains that will be launched soon. These electrified models will be manufactured locally in the South American country.
“We started with a total focus on electrification, but today we have expanded to hybridization,” said GM South America Vice President, Fabio Rua, an audience of Brazilian and South American journalists in Detroit. “This market today cannot live without a hybrid car and our engineers are working on it,” he added.
Specifically, GM’s South American vice president confirmed that the company will launch a total of three Chevrolet vehicles with hybrid powertrains next year in Brazil – without mentioning which models they will be. At least two of them will use 48V mild-hybrid (MHEV) systems and will be equipped with ethanol-capable combustion engines – the most widely used fuel in Brazil, making them flex-fuel hybrid vehicles.
While there’s no official word yet on these Chevrolet hybrid models to be introduced in Brazil, it’s believed they’ll be based on an updated variant of the GEM platform used by nearly all of the brand’s passenger vehicles built in the country – including the Chevy Onix in both its body styles, the Chevy Tracker and the Chevy Montana. Additionally, the upcoming Onix-based entry-level crossover is also expected to feature a series hybrid system.
The first Chevrolet hybrids manufactured in Brazil will be introduced next year in the South American country, where both the vehicles and the new mild-hybrid propulsion system are being developed and manufactured. As such, the hybrid powertrain is expected to later expand to more locally manufactured models and be exported to other South American countries where the brand’s vehicles are sold.

what would like to see is beautiful green sedans with green interiors, lot of chromes details
Okay…the US is clamoring for hybrids and what do we get? More and more EVs.
The e-Assist is back.
South America gets hybrids. We get the shaft!!!
But we get the Celestiq and Brazil does not!
Now who’s the joke on???
Folks, the hybrids are coming to NA too.
You wish.
Wow what a conceit!!!!
What kind of mpg improvement will a 48 volt system bring. Will we be able to compete with Toyota and the Asian autos, I certainly hope so, but doubt it.
How can Mary and her yes gang not be looking at how many hybrids have sold in the last 10 years?
People want them, including my wife, my sister, and my mother-in-law….3 customers in my family circle.
MIL bought a hybrid minivan from Dodge, and we just bought my wife her Escape hybrid.
Why does gm keep ignoring massive markets like sedans, hybrids, small pickups, and minivans?
How do these idiots not see the volume across that slice of the public?
Way late to this hybrid game while Toyota and Ford have dominated it since the mid-2000’s.
Thought Mary said gm will not produce hybrids only full EV’s guess that was only for “Merica
Trump’s budget bill, which has already passed the House, has a provision assessing all hybrid drivers a $100/yr annual fee. This is the equivalent of 555 gallons of fuel based on the $0.18/gal federal gas tax. So hybrid owners are paying gas taxes when they buy gas…and now they will be required to pay another $100/yr? Basically double taxation. Any savings from the hybrid will be eroded by the tax. People won’t want hybrids anymore.
Not any different than putting a $3000 gas guzzler tax on certain vehicles
I think hybrids are a good bridge to a fully electric future. I don’t want an electric car, but I would consider a hybrid if Cadillac were to produce one.
I never wanted a hybrid anyways. Go back to gas and stay in business. Or stay with hybrid and go out of business. The choice is yours.
Wow lots of trolls. GM invented the plug in hybrid Chevy Volt and it was superior to Toyota. Now that GM does not make it because people didn’t understand it people complain to get it back. Poor GM whiplash. I am on GM side the hybrid you will see does not last as long the small battery pack will need to be replaced and never add up to the fuel savings. All the Toyota Prius including mine have had to had the pack replaced at over 5k so there go your savings.
GO FULL EV the large packs last a long time …. Current predictions over 20 years so we are good. This hybrid is silly.
