GM Releases Fix For Chevy Bolt EV, Bolt EUV False Battery Replacement Trouble Codes

GM has released a Service Update through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for the 2020-2022 Chevy Bolt EV and Chevy Bolt EUV. Service Update N232421261 addresses a condition in which a false diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is triggered, resulting in a Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) that is a false alarm. It also triggers a Reduced Propulsion Message and, critically, charging is limited to 30 percent.

The false DTC in question is U3636 symptom 09. Since it throws warnings for reduced propulsion and limits how much charge the battery can hold, it’s resulting in costly and unnecessary battery replacements.

GM-certified EV technicians are instructed to remedy the issue by reprogramming the Hybrid Powertrain Control Module 2. GM estimates this will take less than one hour to complete.

Additionally, GM is throwing in a free North American Charging System (NACS) adapter (part no. 85778137). The Bolt EV and Bolt EUV only have a maximum charging rate of 50 kW, which is low by today’s DC Fast Charging standards, but the NACS adapter will expand access to more public charging stations via the Tesla Supercharger network.

As for the return of the Chevy Bolt EV, GM promises that production will begin on the next-gen model by the end of 2025 at the GM Fairfax Assembly plant in Kansas. Retooling of the plant is underway following the discontinuation of the Chevy Malibu and Cadillac XT4. The next-generation Bolt was expected to be ready for the 2026 model year, but now, GM is saying it will be a 2027 model.

The new Bolt EV will draw heavily from the outgoing Bolt EUV, which offered more rear-seat legroom than the standard Bolt EV hatchback. The new Bolt won’t be a clean-sheet redesign, and will instead ride on the BEV2 platform, the same architecture that underpinned the first generation. That said, the vehicle will incorporate updated GM drive motor technology, as well as switch to LFP (lithium iron phosphate) batteries rather than the current pouch-style cells. With the introduction of the native NACS charge port on the 2026 Cadillac Optiq lineup, there’s a good chance the 2027 Chevy Bolt will have a NACS port, too.

How would I get the free one?
