General Motors has released a safety recall in Canada for certain units of the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups due to an issue with the tailgate opening while driving. This is technically a new recall, but it’s an expansion of recall N232426400 (Transport Canada recall no. 2024-061) issued in February of 2024.
The problem: affected trucks may have a condition where the tailgate’s electronic gate-release switch may short-circuit due to water intrusion, which may cause the tailgate to inadvertently unlatch while the vehicle is in Park.
The hazards: if the tailgate were to become unlatched while driving, unsecured cargo may come out of the truck bed and create a road hazard, thus increasing the risk of a crash.
The fix: certified GM technicians will be instructed to inspect affected vehicles and replace the exterior touchpad switch assemblies, free of charge. Before this remedy is implemented, owners are advised to check that the tailgate is closed and latched before driving.
Affected components: tailgate.
Affected vehicles:
- 2023 – 2024 Chevy Silverado 1500
- 2023 – 2024 GMC Sierra 1500
Number of affected vehicles: According to General Motors, 41,000 trucks are affected. Notably, this recall only applies to vehicles equipped with a power-locking tailgate.
Owners should: General Motors will notify owners of affected vehicles by mail and instruct them to make an appointment with their local GM dealer.
