General Motors just announced plans to invest roughly $4 billion into its U.S. manufacturing operations over the next two years. The new investment will support the production of both gasoline-fueled internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, as well as electric vehicles (EVs). GM aims to leverage the new investment towards the production of more than two million vehicles annually, while adapting key facilities for long-term flexibility.
The $4 billion investment will be allocated to three GM production facilities, including Orion Assembly in Michigan, Fairfax Assembly in Kansas, and Spring Hill Manufacturing in Tennessee.
Orion Assembly was originally expected to produce the Chevy Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV, but will now pivot to building full-size SUVs and gas-powered variants of the ICE-powered Chevy Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 pickups starting in early 2027. Meanwhile, BT1-based vehicles, including the Silverado EV, Sierra EV, Cadillac Escalade IQ, and GMC Hummer EV will be built at Factory Zero plant in Detroit.
Fairfax Assembly is now set to manufacture the next-generation ICE-based Chevy Equinox crossover starting mid-2027. The ICE-based Equinox will also be built at the San Luis Potosí plant in Mexico. Notably, Fairfax will also produce the forthcoming next-gen Chevy Bolt EV later this year, as expected. GM notes that future investment at Fairfax will target its “next generation of affordable EVs.”
Finally, Spring Hill Manufacturing will take on production of the ICE-based Chevy Blazer, once again starting in 2027. In addition, Spring Hill will continue assembly of various EV models, including the Cadillac Lyriq and Vistiq, as well as the ICE-powered Cadillac XT5 crossover.
Company CEO Mary Barra emphasized that the new investment would allow General Motors to offer customers a diversity of vehicles and powertrains.
“We believe the future of transportation will be driven by American innovation and manufacturing expertise,” Barra said. “Today’s announcement demonstrates our ongoing commitment to build vehicles in the U.S and to support American jobs. We’re focused on giving customers choice and offering a broad range of vehicles they love.”
GM states that it operates 50 manufacturing plants and parts facilities across the U.S., directly and indirectly supporting around one million American jobs. Looking ahead, The General plans to sustain its aggressive capital strategy through 2027, with annual investments forecasted between $10 billion and $12 billion, balancing EV development with support for its ICE portfolio.
The latest $4 billion investment announcement follows another announcement made late last May that the automaker would allocate $888 million towards the production of its next-gen V8 engine at the company’s Tonawanda Propulsion Plant in Buffalo, New York. The forthcoming sixth-gen GM Small Block will be cradled by The General’s full-size truck and SUV models.

Would someone who has access to GM representatives (whether Mary Barra, p.r. people, the Buick dealership council, etc.) please ask “What about Buick?” GM never seems to give any news about Buick, even though right now, Buick sales are up in the only two places GM offers it: the U.S. and China. “What is GM’s strategy with Buick?” “Is Buick still going all-EV by 2030?”
I 100% agree. I definitely hope this includes Buick and bringing All production back to North America. I Love Buick and want them to be apart of this plan. They should bring the current Envista, Encore GX and Envision production to either Fairfax or Lansing and build All future Buicks in North America. Envista, Encore GX and Envision should be built at Fairfax and Enclave built at Lansing Delta Township Assembly. NO More Chinese or Korean made Buicks. I’d really Love for GM to reinvest in Flint and bring Buick back to Flint but I unfortunately I don’t think that will happen but you never know. I also would like for GM to continue to offer Gas engines for Buick through 2030 and also offer Plug-In Hybrid and EV. Offering All 3 Powertrains for Cadillac and Buick is what GM should definitely be doing. I’ll Only buy Gas or Plug-In Hybrid Cadillacs and Buicks.
They could also utilize Lansing Grand River that has a lot of excess capacity these days
Lansing Grand River Assembly would be another Great place for future Buick production. The Envista, Encore GX and Envision could be built at this plant or Fairfax the Enclave could continue being built at Lansing Delta Township Assembly and the Plug-In Hybrid and Electric Buicks could be built at Springhill Tennessee Assembly. Hopefully GM reinvests in Flint and brings Buick back to Flint including a few New Assembly Plants and a Brand New State of The Art Modern Multi-Level Buick World Headquarters. Flint Michigan is Buick’s Original Birthplace and it should be brought back there. My 2002 Pontiac Bonneville SE that I had for 19 years from 2002-2021 was built at Lake Orion Assembly. Our 1994 Buick LeSabre was built in Flint Michigan at Buick City and our 1986 Buick Century Custom 4dr. was built in Oklahoma City.
My favorite news GM could give about Buick is that they’re killing the brand and bringing back Pontiac to have front-engine muscle and sports cars/sedans again that cost less than a base c8 vette.
Finally. Factory Zero can produce all the large EVs the market will require for the foreseeable future. It made no sense for GM to keep Orion idle with the expectation that they would need the facility to build 600,000 electric pickups per year. GM sold about 12,000 Sierra and Silverado EVs last year. They should’ve already given up on Barra’s dream and given the workers at Orion something to build that buyers want. I think the plant has been idle for nearly two years waiting for more orders to come in for $100,000 battery-operated trucks.
This announcement constitutes a somewhat hidden admission that GM badly misread the market for those products and is recalibrating. I think they’re going to have to recalibrate on Celestiq too.
Not sure how much you recalibrate on Celestiq when the goal was only to build and sell a couple hundred copies a year as it is…
Mark,
The original plan was “two per day” or somewhere around 500 per year. Tony Roma said in December of 2023 that production was sold out for over 18 months so he implied at that time that GM had orders about 800.
Instead after many production delays and missed SOP promises they’re now saying they plan to 25 for 2025. Therefore they perhaps need to recalibrate their goal down to 50 a year instead of 500. It appears that Celestiq isn’t finding enough buyers for even GM’s modest production goals.
They were never going to sell a lot of 6 figure EV pickups- from the beginning it was known there was going to be a phased rollout starting with the more expensive models. They finally have a full lineup of EV pickups at various price points and they have dropped the pricing of the loaded versions- they should see some improvement in sales.
Obviously this is great news but my question is about a “2027 gas powered Blazer”, everything I had heard was that the Blazer was dead. Is this a next-generation model now?
Bring back the 3600.
I’d Love to see the 3800 V6 return. It was One of GMs BEST Engines EVER!!! It was a Huge and Stupid mistake to discontinue it in 2008 including the closing of the Buick City Assembly Plant in Flint and Buick World Headquarters also in Flint. The 3800 V6 was assembled at the Flint Powetrain North Assembly Plant and was used in pretty much every Pontiac Oldsmobile and Buick vehicle including some Chevrolets. It would have been nice if Cadillac would have made an engine similar to the 3800 V6 and Oldsmobile 307 in Durability and Reliability the 80s, 90s and 00s instead of the disastrous 864 V8, 4100 V8 and Northstar V8. The Cadillac 4.5 Liter V8, 4.9 Liter V8 and 5.0 Liter V8 , 5.7 Liter V8 and LT1 V8 were All solid engines and were bulletproof.
The 3300 LG7 V6 was a smaller deck version of the 3800 and was offered in the following brands and models:
1989-1993 N-Body
Pontiac Grand Am
Oldsmobile Cutlass Calais
Oldsmobile Achieva
Buick Skylark
1989-1993 A-Body
Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera
Buick Century.
The 3300 LN7 V6 was also Extremely Reliable like the 3800 V6 was but didn’t offer a Supercharged version like the 3800 V6 did.
In 1994 the 3.1 Liter V6 was standard on All 1994-1998 Oldsmobile Achievas and Skylarks as well as All 1994-1996 Oldsmobile Cutlass Cieras and Buick Centuries.
Oldsmobile Achieva and Buick Skylark production ended in 1998. The 1997-2005 Buick Century offered the 3100 V6 as the only standard engine available.
Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera production ended in 1996 and Buick Century ended in 2005.
The Buick 3800 V6 Series I II and III was offered in most of GMs Mid-Size and Full-Size vehicles as well as in the 1990-1996 Chevy Lumina APV, Pontiac Transport and Oldsmobile Silhouette Minivans and the 1993-2002 Chevy Camaro and Pontiac Firebird.
The 4-6-8 contrary to popular beliefs is a bullet proof engine. It’s just not refined, rattles in 6 cylinder mode, and didnt hit the required fuel economy.
A Gen VI 3800 would be a hell of an engine!
Use a cylinder set strategy to make a new 3.8/3.3/etc, use one L8T head and make them transverse 4’s. Use in crossovers and hybrids. They’d get great mpg reliably. Use the Hyundai partnership to supply them, scale helps.
Mainstream hybrids need lower costs, not everyone can do a RAV4. And holding the #1 in segment nameplate isn’t always the most profitable, see F-150 versus Silverado.
“Fairfax Assembly is now set to manufacture the next-generation ICE-based Chevy Equinox crossover starting mid-2027.”
Oh but remember folks. Tariffs don’t work.
Right! And next thing people will say is “it wasn’t because of the tariffs, the change was coming anyway…”
Tell me that when a little SUV aka tiny Plymouth mini van is 60k. But with 144 easy payments most Americans won’t notice. Maybe you’re right.
Sounds like you had a good time this night at the bar. Can’t understand a word you just said. And you seem to forget Plymouth has died years ago.
I did. Maybe we can hoist a few tonight.
Give me a few Blue Moons off tap and I’m down.
The Equinox was widely speculated to be the PHEV GM was going to sell in 2027, this tracks with it’s production location.
This likely has nothing to do with the tariffs, when GM announced this today, they made the decision 1 year ago and 6 months ago they released orders for equipment which takes 12-16 months to deliver.
They did the math…
Mid 2027 production start
Mid 2026 equipment delivered to plant for startup
Today – Equipment on order for mid 2026 delivery
– 1 year ago – decision to add vehicle to Fairfax
Fairfax is already ready for the Equinox having built the XT4.
Exactly, gm makes announcements like this a couple times a year. They are just putting extra emphasis on this to show the president that they invest far more in the US than they get credit for.
GM making an announcement about spending billions of dollars on plant upgrades doesn’t mean anything unless they were going to spend that money elsewhere. GM like Ford make these announcements every few years. It doesn’t mean tariffs had anything to do with them. And compared to their EV amounts they spent over the past several years this is a small announcement.
based on the fact its been established that there will be hybrid systems coming in 2027 this may indicate they will build them in the US where their battery factories are already located. This may also be related to the change in production location for the blazer- I can only assume there will be a next gen PHEV model.
How come i neve heard these announcements when sleepy was in charge ?
Dude the tarrifs can change at any time. No company is making long term decisions on tariffs that change every two weeks.. Use common sense. GM is announcing all this as PR, they always invest in the US, this is nothing new.
They should bring back the Ventura. I liked that car.
Made in the USA with ICE based engines…MAGA!!!
It’s good news to hear that GM is investing in building vehicles in the USA, but Mary and her advisors are still misreading the American market. Everyone I talk to wants ICE or Hybrids.
Everyone I talk to wants PHEV or EVs.
…and you only know one person who voted for Nixon, right?
Pauline Kael of The New Yorker was incredulous at the results of the election in 1972 because although he won 49 of 50 states, she, in her bubble, knew only one individual who voted for him. Those words have since become famous for the insular mentality they represented then and that still permeate our society today.
They are going to build hybrids.. Keep up before you call her incompetent
I find it interesting that Mary and upper GM managers are being heralded as heroes for bringing back all these jobs to America. Wasn’t it upper GM management who sent all the jobs to Mexico, China and Canada to improve the profit margin. The vehicles didn’t get any cheaper being built in China but profits sure soared.
And, yes they serve at the discretion of shareholders which ultimately is US.
Under the law the way it’s structured, GM owes a duty to maximize profits for its shareholders. That’s it.
Which if it can be bent enough to justify vapid investment in EV’s and stock buybacks, can definitely be justified in investing in the economy that buys most of their vehicles.
EVs are almost 20% of their sales if you include the Honda and Acura models they manufacturer. That’s nothing to sneeze at.
vapid investment? People are truly clueless. Once built at scale Evs are cheaper to build than ICE vehicles- this is one reason why GM wants to be a leader in EVs. Tesla has enjoyed profit margins most automakers have never been able to achieve- partially because of the lower cost to manufacture vehicles with less components. At no point did GM ever stop investing in the US- they just started investing a lot more into Mexico based on trade deals the US signed under two different presidents- one of which is the same one who is president now who has disowned the agreement he negotiated several years ago. Amazing how people leave that part out. He had supposedly “fixed” NAFTA only to come back 4 years later and act like he never initiated a new agreement.
Is GM not supposed to strive for profits???
There is no government money for EVs. Worse there is no earth magnets to power them. Lest we forget that The Chinese are in a Tariff war with the US. And without a solid provable solid market for EVs GM could wind up with a backlog of unsold cars that would make the Bright Drop disaster look small.
Their ev sales are up as reported on this site yesterday
Yes, This was in response to Trumps first term deal with Mexico and Canada which he was very proud of at the time. He really through them and other auto manufactures under the bus going back on it.
But I lost my union job to GM giving all the work to none union carriers hauling all the vehicles to dealers and they are working for peanuts!
Gary…..Most companies prefer slaves. Like illegal immigrants. I was in the OMV to renew my licences and observed an obvious illegal get his drivers license. When they held up the eye chart for him to read he said he couldn’t read English. Does that tell you something. They took his picture, gave him a license and sent him out the door too drive off in a large construction truck. I was told later if you didn’t give it to him you possibly would be fired.
anyone surprised by America’s love of exploitation for profits needs to pick up a history book. Nothing new or shocking here.
Wait, there’s going to be a gasoline Powered Chevy Blazer now in 2027? I thought 2026 (now) was its last year?
this is new information
As a mechanic it looks to me the GM is only trying to double down on planned obsolescence…. I mean, after 3 decades of the LS engine and it’s become the least reliable v-8 on the market which is hard to believe with how terrible the hemi is.. but as bad as it sounds is still way better than the (can’t make it to 100,000) 4 cylinder engines from GM I’ve done in the equinox, Malibu, ECT…just oil burning trash, and the high failure v-6, just burns oil, the oil life system helps to make sure 100,000 miles won’t happen unless you buy another engine… Just basic stuff… it’s also going to rust out about the time the lease is up…. Just walk away, GM gave up, just return the favor. They only care about the share holders and quality is laughable… They’ll be looking for yet another bail out soon enough
From the charts above it looks like XT5 and XT6 might be getting a refresh if this action is two years out.
Kudos to President Trump for actually having a pro American policy for manufacturing unlike his predecessor, and to GM management for finally seeing the light and repatriating jobs and utilizing excess capacity.
This might not create any new jobs. That’s the fallacy in Trump’s thinking. It might maintain some jobs. More cars are being built today with less people. Robots don’t forget to apply a sticker or tighten a bolt incorrectly.
manufacturing increased more under last president than under trump 45. Look it up. If you believe there was no US manufacturing policy under biden you are delusional. The IIJA was full of provisions and incentives to promote onshoring.
A lot of the manufacturing gain was caused by the rehiring after Covid. The stifling mandates and regulations under Brandon were driving OEMs to Mexico and China to try and cut costs to meet the billions of dollars it would cost. Trump did away with these regs and now the companies can afford to build more in the US.
My how times have changed. Seems like just yesterday the big guy blew in the town and sniffed nibbled and fondled Mary. She bowed down and now a pick up truck costs an extra of $10000
My current ride, built in Mexico, has excellent build quality. My previous one, built at Fairfax, was a disaster. So, bye-bye quality and hello higher UAW prices. My eyes are beginning to wander – to other than GM and Ford.
I had GM cars built in Lansing, Wentzville, Shreveport, and Linden NJ. I think I had to take them back for a few minor recalls and a grand total of two times for warranty work for the trim and ignition switch.
$4 BILLION to build EV vehicles no one wants. BETTER WAKE UP THE GM BOARD.
you should read before commenting, the investment includes ICE and EVs
I feel like this is only the beginning of a much broader manufacturing strategy from GM. They’re currently selling off their assets of GM Korea/Daewoo. And to add the Trax/Envista engine and transmission are already made in Mexico. I could see production of those vehicles moving to Mexico, hence another reason they’re moving blazer/equinox/silverado production to the US.
The Blazer should have never been awarded to Mexico. It was originally slated to be built in Spring Hill and then was changed to Mexico. The Equinox was built at Spring Hill and in Canada before exclusively built in Mexico to save money on Labor. These 2 products should have never been built outside the USA because American Consumers buy 85% of those built in Mexico. The UAW has been telling GM this for years along with the demand for EV’s is very limited, but GM always thinks they know better. I am happy Spring Hill, Lake Orion and Fairfax will be getting work to keep those hard working members working!
Just like GM raced to develop EVs en masse after Biden’s EV Mandate, that’s now toast, GM will rush to bring manufacturing back to the US just in time for tariffs to be abolished. Just watch.
it looks good for US and mexico .but canada is left out! Mexico doesnt buy GM vehicles in any numbers, Canada has always had GM as its best seller. Think it maybe time for canadians to stop buying GM products and buy some thing built here!
Hopefully a V8 that doesn’t fail ,a XT5 built here not EV , maybe a sedan or maybe a car that a young person will consider. But I doubt it
