General Motors is set to overhaul the iconic Chevy Silverado 1500 pickup truck in conjunction with the 2027 model year, ushering in the light-duty pickup’s fifth generation. GM Authority has already covered many of the forthcoming updates at length, including the new sixth-gen Small Block V8 engine, a possible hybrid variant, an updated exterior styling, the new interior, and more. Now, we’re back at it with yet another close look at the future 2027 Chevy Silverado, this time examining the pickup’s new rear window design.
The current Silverado 1500 incorporates a rectangular sliding rear window framed by plastic trim pieces along the top and bottom edges. These plastic bookends, while stylistically cohesive, have been known to develop leaks over time, eventually cracking and letting in water, as well as creating a few NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness) issues.
Now, as captured by our spy photographers on this camouflaged prototype, the 2027 Chevy Silverado appears to adopt a new rear window layout with rounded corners and no plastic framing elements. The absence of the upper and lower trim pieces provides a clean, integrated look, while the curvature of the corners may also aid in reducing stress points, thereby improving the performance of the seals and reducing the potential for water intrusion.
Beyond the window design, the prototype confirms other design updates we’ve previously reported. These include new quad exhaust outlets replacing the rectangular “HDMI-style” tips and revised taillamps with a new LED signature. Up front, expect to find a more conventional fascia design that ties in with GM’s refreshed gas-powered SUVs.
Mechanically, the next-gen Silverado is also set to debut GM’s sixth-generation Small Block V8 engine, as well as a new hybrid powertrain option. Returning engines will include the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B and 3.0L I6 LZ0 turbodiesel Duramax. All of these updates will ride on the GM T1-2 architecture, which will serve as an evolution of the current platform offers improved refinement and other structural upgrades.
Inside, the 2027 Silverado will feature a revamped interior with new infotainment, larger screens, better materials, and enhanced comfort.
As always, keep it locked to GM Authority for all the latest on the next-generation 2027 Chevy Silverado 1500, plus everything else from around the GM universe.

CHEVROLET SILVERADO 2016 the worst car I hava had…thats piece of,,,
Why don’t they go with the whole rear window opening instead of that little slider
GM keeps copying off its twin Toyota Tundra
Gm copying Fords rear laser cut window design, typical follower fashion cant innovate for nothing
Oh, are you going to ignore all the things Ford has blatantly copied from GM trucks?
Just do the Toyota full vertical slider! Make it actually useful!! No one is asking for a mid gate. No one is asking for a tiny slider. Full vertical slider or a forcefield. Figure it out.
Could have done the removable glass option, like the EV.
Ya know what provides a clean, integrated look and zero leakage? A solid effing rear window. I know many will disagree but give me the option for a solid window on high trim levels.
Hopefully this fixes the rear window leak. 2016-2026 rear slide window leaks like a sieve in both 1500 & 2500. I’d be curious if I could slap one into my 2022.
Instead of window dressing why don’t you build us a truck where the engines last beyond warranty transmissions last beyond warranty
Toyota has had you beat on the rear window. You should make it just like Toyota unless they have some kind of patent which should have expired by now. They have been doing it on 4runners and their trucks forever.
Why don’t you get rid of theemissions on both the Diesel and the Gas engines it would solve a great deal of some the issues both of the engines operate much more effiently I know you have the technology to do that ….
….
I ‘ve been loyal to GM products for most of life my very first brand new trucks was a 2000 3/4 ton 3 door Silverodo had no issues with it except doing my maintenance like replacing .. brakes , water pump . Sparkplugs and wires no major issues the truck ran GREAT then I bought a 2016 1 / 2 ton
Who cares what Chevy, or any other GM (Generally Mediocre Cars Co) division does. What a bunch of junkers.
I hope they redesign that gawd awful front end. I havent bought a new chevy truck since 2014.
I don’t care about the design it’s stupid and they should be more concerned about the type of material or sources they buy from to install on their vehicles i have 2005 2500hd and the moldings are holding up better than my new truck and has broken down with minor fixes to it way less then the newer one I own 2015 gmc sierra slt. Engine x2, transmission x2, with oem fixes had to mod it to make it better. I don’t know what crayon eating engineers they have hired but they running that company to the ground im positive I can do a better job.
Just listened to an interview with a former GM transmission engineer on YouTube (The car guy I think), and owning a Silverado I’ll never own another GM made vehicle ever again. The bean counters and money men are running the whole operation and they couldn’t care less about quality or value. It’s how to make more money at off you.
My 2017 model i really likethe look but hamds down the worst chevy 1500 truck i have ever owned an i went dowm the 6.0 ford f250 road too still chevy trucks are the worst amd i have owned 7 of them overthe years starting with yhe 1996 king cab syep side with the 4.3 vortex just give me the 2003 ss silverado that i bought new it was the bullet proof no hassle everyday driver i loved plus it would show you something from red light to redlight also … but some times you would see blue lights in the rear veiw also ..lol
Holy cow, your comment was rough to read……
Anyways, the rear window looks exactly like the new f150s
No doubt they will make it bigger than last years model. Soon need a manlift to check the oil.
that is, if they don’t remove the dipstick for the oil, like they did for the tranny.
I will never understand why GM, Ram, and Ford never offer a (Tundra) rear window that can slide all the way down as an option
It is literally the only thing I think Toyota has over the Domestic options.
Who cares about the rear window. Your transmission’s continuously fail, maybe try redesigning that!!!
150,000 mile warranty, stainless brake and fuel lines, or drop the price 15,000.
If you have a extended cab, why the slider? It to far to away. Solid window, looks better less problems.
One of the reasons when I bought my 2024 HD 2500, i went with the LT instead of the High Country, LTZ or the ZR2 was because of that damn window. Who wants to worry about people in the back seat leaving the window open. A slider would be great if it were a single cab but is not practical in crew cabs. I love my choice of the L.T with all the interior upgrades, including the upgrade suspension and save me $25+ thousand.
These newer trucks make me like the deal I got in my 2002 Avalanche 2500 last month even more.
