Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Chevy Traverse sales in Q1 2025 put the Bow Tie brand’s all-new flagship unibody crossover in fourth place among 13 entries in the mainstream three-row crossover segment when ranked by sales volume.

As has been the case for a while, the Ford Explorer (see running Ford Explorer sales) led the space, though sales were down 19 percent to 47,314 units. It was followed by the Honda Pilot in second, which saw a nine percent bump to 32,642 units, and the Kia Telluride, the first of two entries from the Hyundai Motor Group, in third with a 17 percent upswing to 29,843 sales. The Traverse (see running Chevy Traverse sales) took fourth place with a 62 percent jump to 28,331 deliveries. The Hyundai Palisade rounded out the top five with a four percent increase to 31,958 units. The Toyota Grand Highlander was next, placing sixth with a two percent uptick to 25,718 units, while the VW Atlas took seventh as sales were up one percent to 25,591 units. The rest of the field each posted less than 20K sales, including the GMC Acadia (see running GMC Acadia sales), the Traverse’s corporate cousin and platform mate, which saw a 72 percent leap to 13,257 deliveries.

The Palisade, Grand Highlander, and Atlas each earned a nine percent share. The rest of the field held a seven percent share or less, including the Acadia, which saw its segment share increase one percentage points to four percent.

The mainstream large three-row crossover segment contracted 1 percent to 300,542 deliveries in Q1 2025, meaning Chevy Traverse sales significantly outperformed the segment average.

Combining GMC Acadia sales with those of the Chevy Traverse totaled 41,588 deliveries for a combined 13.8 percent segment share, putting GM in third place overall in the segment, still behind crosstown rival Ford.

For informational and comparative purposes, we also provide sales figures for utilities that overlap in price or seating capacity with large three-row crossovers like the Traverse and Acadia, which are generally smaller but often cross-shopped with them, and include:

  • Midsize crossovers that offer three rows of seating, such as the Hyundai Santa Fe, Kia Sorento, and Mitsubishi Outlander.
  • Midsize crossovers with two rows of seating that are sold at a price point similar to the Traverse, including Nissan Murano, Ford Edge, and GM’s own Chevy Blazer.
  • Midsize and full-size crossover models sold under the same name but whose sales are not broken out by their respective automakers, like the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Specifically, Jeep’s parent company, Stellantis, does not individually report sales figures of the two-row Grand Cherokee vs. the three-row Grand Cherokee L.

The GM Authority Take

The Chevy Traverse posted the highest segment share increase during Q1 2025, and the second-highest growth on a percentage basis (second only to its corporate cousin, the GMC Acadia). That enabled the Traverse to significantly outpace the segment.

We attribute the impressive growth to a fresh and competitive product that’s readily available as the dealer level.

And even though crosstown rival Ford Explorer continues to lead the pack individually, and the Pilot and Telluride sold more units than the Traverse, GM was competitive when combining its two three-row utility vehicles. However, the fact that Hyundai and Kia – which now outsell GM in this space – continue to represent what is likely the biggest threat.

About Chevrolet Traverse

The 2025 Chevy Traverse arrives with a variety of small changes for the second model year of the crossover SUV’s third generation, with the biggest being the addition of a new High Country trim level to the all-new Chevy Traverse, after a one-year hiatus.

But it is missing three key features, and drops base LS trim and 1FL trims, while offering a new Z71 Adventure Package. Furthermore, the 2025 comes with fewer standard safety features, with some now optional, and the power panoramic sunroof is now a standalone option, previously standard on the RS trim.

Here are the 2025 Traverse paint colors, interior colorways, and available wheels. Harvest Bronze Metallic paint, which is only available on Z71 trim, is no longer available to order for the rest of the model year. Here are all the drive modes explained.

Ironically, the Chevy Traverse and GMC Acadia get an exterior lighting feature that the Buick Enclave doesn’t.

The 2025 Traverse still offers a single powertrain choice, namely the turbocharged 2.5L I4 LK0 gasoline engine, which develops 328 horsepower and 326 pound-feet of torque. The 2025 Traverse can tow 5,000 pounds.

The Traverse’s front wheels are driven by an eight-speed automatic transmission as standard. All-wheel drive is available as a “regular” system on all trim levels, while the Z71 trim level exclusively sports an “off-road-capable” twin-clutch system.

Production of the 2026 Chevy Traverse is set to begin on July 14th.

    1. The problem is dropping the V6. Chevrolet should have kept the V6, and offered a Hybrid option

I’d rather have the turbo four-banger! More torque and horsepower than that stupid and pathetic V-6!! Think of the fuel savings you’ll see, especially when $8.00 a gallon may not be too far away.

      2. The stupid Four Banger is a joke. I’ll keep my 2019 SLT Acadia! Not one problem and have 105 K on the clock!

      3. There is nothing wrong with the Turbo 4. It is more torque than my six. People need to get over cylinder envy. Power is power be it 4, 6 or 8 in daily drivers. Now in a performance car the sound of the V8 is a required part.

As for Hybrids. You can keep your fools gold. The system cost more, It still need ICE service as well Hybrid service that all adds to the cost of a model you have to pay more for the system. You never save enough fuel to make back what you pay in added costs and people are too ignorant to understand it is a shell game.

Only in the case of the Corvette is where it has value. It adds AWD with no direct drive and makes it cheaper and easier to add to the car. It is not sold as some major efficiency thing it is not.
Gm needs to use their divisions better and offer more models with more changes. The shorter platform was nice as it gave us three different sized. Not all of us need a third row or more cargo. We had a Terrain till it got smaller so we went to the Acadia twice.
Now they have extended the XT5 Cadillac and we may go to it. We also have a Blazer in the family and we may look at it since it was given added years now.

Sales are down and will continue to be down as I’m not the only one abandoning the models. A friend already went to a Terrain again.

I would like to have the V6 but that is not the issue. Most people would never know it was 4 cylinder unless they are told.

        1. Agree on the power front, been saying that for a while. Give me a more powerful properly set up smaller motor (well built too) than some peanut butter spread motor from another range to try and adapt. This 2.5 is a gem minus the sound. It is based off the 2.7, what’s not to love?

Disagree on the hybrid front though. They can easily make their money back as a regular hybrid (not PHEV) is relatively cheap. Take the Rav4 for example, it is a $1500 option, and gets 11 mpg combined better. In 15k miles a year you make that back in just over 3 years. They save wear and tear on the ICE engine (yes it adds a level but it is pretty well known they are reliable set ups). On top of that, they cut emissions which helps the environment. Using the batter from a large EV and split it in to hybrids does a ton more in terms of saving emissions than that one EV.

Big fan of hybrids, immediate power, mpg saving where it needs it most (city) and quiet running. Looking forward to this being spread across the range, and hopefully large trucks and SUV’s who can really benefit.

  2. This right here: “However, the fact that Hyundai and Kia – which now outsell GM in this space – continue to represent what is likely the biggest threat.”

It’s sad that Hyundai/Kia combined outsell GM in this segment, but they do offer a compelling product with a V6.

    1. It is not the V6 but more Price, Price and Price. Their models sell cheaper and they have made it their practice to undercut prices in the market. But to do that they cut many corners and you see it in engine, transmission and trim failures in their models.

I have a friend at one of their dealers and he drives a Chevy even though he could get a big discount on their products. He said it is not worth the saving.
