It looks as though General Motors is gunning for a Nürburgring lap record, and now, a new video suggests the Corvette ZR1 or ZR1X may have secured exactly that.
In a recent post, several of the official Corvette social media accounts are serving up a brief teaser video showing the C8 Corvette attacking the ‘Ring at speed, with either the ZR1 or new ZR1X diving into a corner as a drone follows behind. The video then switches to a shot of the crossed flags Corvette logo. “Fast as green hell,” the caption reads.

For those who may have missed it, Chevy now has a pair of new go-faster C8 Corvette variants in the stable, including the C8 ZR1, unveiled last July, and the ZR1X, unveiled earlier this month. It’s unclear exactly which C8 variant is featured in the teaser video, but given GM unveiled the new ZR1X only about a week ago, the ZR1X certainly seems plausible.
As GM Authority covered previously, a team of Chevrolet engineers have been spotted at the Nürburgring reportedly conducting a multi-week development program for the ZR1 and ZR1X, and although Chevy has yet to confirm that it is going for a lap record attempt, all signs seem to be pointing in that direction. The attempt would follow Ford’s impressive 6:52.072 lap time with the Mustang GTD, which made the ‘Stang the fourth-fastest production sports car and quickest American vehicle.
According to one ex-GM engineer, the new Corvette ZR1 and ZR1X should have what it takes to not only beat that time, but obliterate it. In an interview, former GM ride and handling engineer Jim Mero said that he ran the numbers on the new ZR1 and came up with a time between 6:23 and 6:30, which, while speculative, would make for an insane new record. Mero also posited that the ZR1 might actually be faster around the ‘Ring than the ZR1X, given the latter is weighed down by hybrid components that wouldn’t necessarily make it any quicker across the entirety of the lap.
To note, Chevy posted its new teaser video on June 28th.
“I’m no bran surgeon, but today is 6:28 and they post this…” writes one social media user.

Wow. 6:28 would be an unbelievable time if true.
I’m SO tired of hearing about Corvette and Mustang variants, I could spit. As if they both don’t have other things to worry about and to address.
Just being random:
It’s as likely to be 7 – 28 – 25 for the ZR1 (the dash marks used as a minus): 6:31.75 which itself would be an awesome time albeit a little more achievable.
I know July (AKA 7) is a month later; however; if the official time is revealed on 7-4…
America declares independence again by winning against most of the European “ELITE”
If the Z06 can dip below 7:00 and the ZR1 Below 6:40 it would be amazing enough

In another video Jim Mero said theoretically the C8 ZR1 could do a 6:23.
So sub 6:30 for sure. Cry porsche girls. Ford irrelevant again. And why is no one complaining about no Ford ecoboost GT ‘ring times when they all sell for over $2M? It’s a hypercar with no official ‘ring time but the 1064hp Corvette ZR1 IsNt a sUpERcaR. Idiocy.
Question to ponder. What is the cost to take a vette, staff and equipment etc to do laps at the “ring”? Then offset this cost to any sales increase if any to said car. How about forget the “ring” and start the tradition of these meanness laps at COTA.
