Cars.com just released its annual American-Made Index in a year when country of origin is at the top of many car shoppers’ minds. By and large, the Trump administration’s trade agenda hasn’t radically altered new car prices, but tariff fears have made many shoppers interested in American-made cars. On this year’s list, only one GM model made the top 20 most American cars: the Chevy Colorado midsize pickup. Interestingly, the Colorado ranked in 19th place while the GMC Canyon is way down in 42nd place.
As it often does in these kinds of studies, Tesla dominated the top spots on the list. The Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X took the top four places on the list, in that order. The only Tesla model not on the list is the Cybertruck because the study only includes vehicles that meet the Federal Highway Administration’s definition of a light-duty vehicle.
“As import tariffs shake up the auto industry and influence consumer priorities, our 2025 American-Made Index offers a timely snapshot of which vehicles and automakers are truly driving U.S. economic impact,” said Patrick Masterson, lead researcher for Cars.com’s American-Made Index. “Tesla continues to lead, claiming the top four spots and showcasing its commitment to domestic production. About 25% of the more than 400 vehicles on sale in the U.S. made this year’s AMI, and whether a vehicle is No. 1 or No. 99, it contributes to the U.S. economy.”
The next most American-made car is the Kentucky-built Chevy Corvette, which is in 29th place. GM’s Texas-built full-size SUVs, the Chevy Suburban, GMC Yukon, Cadillac Escalade, and Chevy Tahoe, also ranked well on the list, taking 38th through 41st place. The Cadillac CT5 and Cadillac XT5 also made the top 50, which are made in Michigan and Tennessee, respectively.
The other big study that tracks the most American cars is the Kogod School of Business Made in America Auto Index, in which the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon ranked seventh place on the 2024 list.
The Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon tend to rank well on American-made indices because they’re assembled at the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri, the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B engine is built at the GM Spring Hill plant in Tennessee, and the 8L45 8-speed automatic transmission is built at the GM Toledo transmission plant in Ohio. That makes these trucks as American as their respective brands suggest.
