Chevy Camaro Owner Wants Mechanic To Cut Brakes For Better Burnouts: Video

Look, we get it – some folks just love doing burnouts. And why not? Cooking the rear tires in an overt display of horsepower and torque is one of those primal, age-old traditions among gearheads. Thing is, you gotta do it the right way, and as it turns out, not everyone understands that. Unfortunately, that includes one Chevy Camaro owner who went to a mechanic to permanently disable their rear brakes.

This particular story comes from David Long, better known online as The Car Wizard, a mechanic-turned-influencer who shared one of the more memorable encounters from his shop in a recent short. In the video, Long recounts how a customer brought in a Camaro equipped with a 305 cubic-inch (5.0L) V8 under the hood, complaining that it was “tough to do burnouts.”

After inspecting the vehicle and finding no issues with the braking system, Long says the customer revealed their real request – cut the rear brake lines on their Chevy Camaro. The idea was to eliminate rear braking force so that the car could perform a brake stand burnout, with the front brakes holding the car in place as the rear tires turn into smoke.

Long flatly refused, calling the request what it is – dangerous. “That sounds like a lawsuit. That sounds like someone’s gonna get hurt,” he says in the video. Without functioning rear brakes, an emergency stop would likely result in loss of control, as Long correctly points out.

The Chevy Camaro owner, apparently frustrated with the answer, complained that no shop would accommodate their request,  which speaks to the basic safety and liability of disabling the rear brakes for the sake of burning rubber. “Afterwards, we joked around the shop. It’s like, who does that?” Long said.

While tools like line-lock systems are available for legitimate drag racing applications, allowing temporary front brake engagement without compromising rear brake function, disabling the brakes entirely for street burnouts is, well, pretty stupid if you ask us.

  3. When I was kid, I was told by the local racer that street cars doing burn outs was hard on the car. It became popular when car themed TV shows started doing them. Plus with 200 ponies it wasn’t that great of a show. Now days, a modern pickup can do them. So it’s not that impressive to me.

  4. I have line lock in both my cars. Both are 6spd’s. Although the front brakes do most of the stopping power, eliminating the back brakes is NOT a good idea.
