The GM Authority Take

The drastic drop in Chevy South Korea sales in April continues the string of poor sales performance for the Bow tie brand in the Asian country, where it’s consistently losing volume and market share. In fact, the drop in April represents the 16th consecutive monthly loss for Chevy in the local market.

Nearly all Chevrolet Korea models suffered massive double- and triple-digit contractions in April, including the discontinued Chevy Tahoe and Chevy Traverse, since new versions of these nameplates have not launched locally. However, the Chevy Trax is the primary reason for the overall drop, since it suffered a massive decrease of nearly 700 units year-over-year. The entry-level subcompact crossover continues to lose volume in South Korea against competition from its more established local rivals.

Meanwhile, the Chevy Trailblazer saw the biggest drop on a percentage basis among current models, continuing to drop at a rapid pace in the South Korean market. The low-volume Chevy Colorado was the only Chevy model to finish the month in the green, adding a measly five units to the bottom line and remaining well below its best performance in the country.

About The Numbers

  1. So GM exports about 33k Chevrolets/Buicks from S Korea to the US every month and S Korea buys 1300 Chevrolets per month. All of the Chevrolets bought were made by them, save 10.

I think this is why the tariffs are in place….just a guess.

I wonder how much less carbon would be burned getting the cars to dealers if those cars were made in Lordstown instead of being made in S Korea and shipped 6400 miles to the West Coast via diesel ships, with most of them then being shipped to the Midwest and East Coast? Could Mary calculate that since she’s in favor of going EV-only?

    1. This is what people don’t seem to understand. And like I said before, GM had ZERO trouble building the Cavalier, Cobalt, and Cruze along with their Pontiac siblings in the US. And the Chevy Sonic was also built in the US. All these cars were still sold at competitive prices. And these sub-compact CUVs, are plenty popular in the US to justify the scale.

But they still downvote you because Trump issued tariffs. When Biden was doing it nobody cared.

  2. Sales in Korea will continue to be difficult.
GM sells Chevrolet, Cadillac, and GMC brands in Korea, but Chevrolet has three models (Trax, Trailblazer, Colorado), Cadillac has three models (CT-5 V, Escalade, Lyriq), and GMC has Sierra. Only Trax and Trailblazer are produced in Korea (Bupyeong Plant 1)

For reference, the mainstream vehicles that sell well in Korea are vehicles that are about the size of Hyundai Elantra, Tucson, Palisade, Sonata, Kia Sorento, and Sportage.
    And hybrid vehicles are popular.

GM also sold competing vehicles (Malibu, Captiva, Cruze, etc.) in the past, but they were discontinued when the plants were closed (Gunsan & Bupyeong Plant 2).
Equinox and Traverse, Tahoe were imported and sold, but they were sluggish due to poor convenience features and high prices.

Recently, GM Korea announced the withdrawal of its direct AS centers and the sale of its corporate assets. For reference, all brands that produce cars in Korea (Hyundai, Kia, Renault Korea, and KGM=Ssangyong) are operating direct AS centers.

This has led Koreans to suspect that GM will withdraw from the Korean market.
-> Of course, GM Korea still announced that it will remain in Korea.

    1. Sell people the cars they want: what a concept! It’s not like cars that size aren’t being sold in Latin America. I’m sure they could be built in Korea.
