The GM Authority Take

Chevrolet Brazil sales continued their downward trend with another double-digit drop in May. Although the 21,601 deliveries for the month represented a slight increase on a month-over-month basis, significantly reducing the decline, the May performance represents Chevy’s fourth consecutive drop in the Brazilian market, once again placing the brand in a vulnerable position within the ranking of the country’s best-sellers, far behind Fiat and Volkswagen in first and second, respectively, but quite close to fourth place.

Nearly all Chevrolet models sold in Brazil were in the red during May, resulting in a cumulative volume drop of over 4,000 units. Among these were its two best-sellers – the Chevy Onix and Chevy Tracker. Like in months past, the drop in Onix sales had the biggest impact on the overall result, draining 3,337 units from the bottom line on a year over year basis. Fortunately, the Tracker suffered a more modest single-digit drop.

Meanwhile, the Chevy S10 pickup was the only model in the portfolio to finish May in the green. The solid double-digit increase enabled it to regain second place among the best-sellers in its segment, outpacing the Ford Ranger, which has outsold it in recent months. The midsize truck also managed to bring its year-to-date into the green, becoming one of only a handful of Chevrolet models sold in Brazil to finish the first five months in the green.
