As covered previously, anyone who owns a Chevy Silverado or GMC Sierra with an aftermarket bed cap installed may run into an issue with the Rear Camera Mirror. For those that don’t know, the Rear Camera Mirror is designed to stream a live video feed from behind the vehicle to the rearview mirror, and relies on a dedicated camera mounted at the top rear of the cab. However, aftermarket bed caps can obstruct the camera lens, effectively rendering the feature useless. Fortunately, an aftermarket solution is now available to fix this issue.
Although the Rear Camera Mirror improves rearward visibility by bypassing obstructions like rear passengers, headrests, and window pillars, the system uses a camera mounted near the cargo lamp and Center High-Mounted Stop Lamp (CHMSL) to provide the livestream view. And that means a bed cap can block the camera, as several GM Authority readers have reported.
To address this, Camera Source is now offering an aftermarket relocation kit that allows owners to reposition the camera that provides the livestream view. Installing the kit requires users to unplug the original camera located in the third brake light and mount a new camera on a flat surface, such as the rear edge of the bed cap. The kit includes a 25-foot extension harness that connects the new camera to the original factory plug inside the cab, preserving the feature functionality.
The relocation kit includes:
- A new camera
- An adjustable universal mounting bracket
- A 25-foot extension harness
- All necessary hardware
The kit also comes with a one-year warranty.
With the new setup, the relocated camera restores the Rear Camera Mirror’s functionality, despite the presence of an aftermarket bed cap. The system functions identically to the factory setup, simply operating from a new vantage point.
The relocation kit is priced at $294, per the Camera Source website, and fits the 2019-through-2025 model years for the light-duty Chevy Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500, as well as the heavy-duty Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD.
