The 2025 Chevy Equinox serves as the initial model year for the crossover’s latest fourth generation, debuting a long list of updates and changes over the preceding third-gen Equinox. Interestingly, the 2025 Chevy Equinox includes a special Service Mode designed for specific scenarios. Now, GM Authority is taking a closer look at the 2025 Chevy Equinox Service Mode.
Essentially, Service Mode is a special setting for the 2025 Chevy Equinox that allows the vehicle to be used for diagnostic checks, maintenance, and emissions testing, all without actually starting the engine. It’s designed to help technicians and inspection stations verify that the vehicle’s systems, such as the dashboard warning lights and electronic controls, are working properly. One of the main reasons Service Mode is important is because it allows either the owner or a service professional to check the malfunction indicator lamp, also known as the “check engine light,” without turning over the engine. This is especially helpful during emissions inspections, where verifying that the light is functioning is often required by law.
To activate Service Mode, the user must start with the vehicle completely off and with their foot off the brake pedal. When those conditions are met, the user can then press and hold the engine start/stop button for more than five seconds. This will switch the vehicle into Service Mode.
In this mode, the car’s electronic systems, such as the instrument panel and audio system, will power on as if the vehicle were running. However, the engine will not start, and the vehicle cannot be driven.
Once finished with Service Mode, the user can then turn the vehicle off by simply pressing the engine start/stop button a second time. This will shut down all systems and return the vehicle to its normal off state.
As a reminder, the 2025 Chevy Equinox features the turbocharged 1.5L I4 LSD gasoline engine and rides on the GM D2 platform. Production takes place at the GM San Luis Potosà plant in Mexico.

Don’t expect your salesperson to know. GM training is a 3rd party rep showing up for 30 minutes every 60 days.
1.5 Liter engine? Does this also double as a pedal car?
I like accessory mode better. You only have to press the button for less than a second.
U shouldn’t need this but gm keeps making problematic vehicles. Jussi sold my 2018 equinox because the transmission isn’t shifting properly. 40,000 miles. I have 3 gms all don’t shift properly, especially in the winter. Bought a vehicle with a much better warranty. Ram is extending to 100,000 miles on new trucks. I’ve been a Gm guys for 55 yrs it may be coming to an end. Quality control!
Things get cold in the winter, including transmission fluid. Takes several minutes of driving for things to start flowing smoothly. I’ve had a lot of different cars in my life from many different manufacturers…none of them were smooth until they warmed up it when it gets below freezing.
The RAM warranty applies to 2026MY and newer. Honestly, RAM powertrains have been pretty reliable…they wouldn’t extend the powertrain warranty if they had any concerns it was going to cost them a lot in warranty claims.
Even certified pre-owned Jeeps get their powertrain warranty extended out to 100K miles from the original in service date [and Jeeps aren’t universally renowned for their reliability.] The powertrains are typically just fine. It’s all the other bits and pieces…
Check engine light on and off continuously
Probably a boost sensor, or the turbo.
