2022 Chevy COPO Camaro 572 Up For Auction In Portland

The sixth-generation Chevy Camaro had its fair share of special editions over the course of its lifecycle. However, one that is perhaps overlooked because of its scarcity is the COPO Camaro 572, which was engineered for competitive drag racing. Now, a rare 2022 Chevy COPO Camaro 572 is up for auction in Oregon on Bring a Trailer.

As its name implies, power for the COPO Camaro 572 comes from a massive 572-cubic-inch (9.3L) Big Block V8. This race-bred motor features an iron block, aluminum heads, a forged steel crankshaft, forged steel connecting rods, and forged aluminum pistons. Chevy’s crate engine version of this mill produces 727 horsepower at 6,800 RPM and 680 pound-feet of torque at 4,900 RPM.

Upgrades to the enormous engine include a Holley Sniper EFI intake manifold, a Meziere electric water pump, a PWR aluminum radiator, an oil breather, long-tube exhaust headers, and Chevrolet Performance aluminum cylinder heads.

The COPO Camaro was a purpose-built drag racing version of the sixth-generation Chevy Camaro that was eligible for the NHRA Stock and Super Stock Eliminator classes. The name can be traced back to the legendary 1969 COPO Camaro, which was a racing version of the muscle coupe that was only available to order via the little-known “Central Order Production Office” system.

It should be noted that this is not a street-legal car; it doesn’t have mirrors or a VIN. This is strictly a drag car for track use. Some other upgrades over a more pedestrian Camaro, like an SS model, include an ATI Racing 3-speed automatic transmission, a spooled 9-inch rear end, a carbon fiber, cowl-induction hood, a drag parachute, and wheelie bars. Inside is a pair of racing seats with Stroud harnesses, a roll cage, a Hurst shifter, and AutoMeter instruments.

The high bid on this COPO Camaro as of this writing is $105,572, and the auction ends on Friday, June 13th. A similar sixth-gen COPO Camaro just sold on Bring a Trailer earlier this month with a hammer price of $106,500, so it will be interesting to see if this one goes even higher.

  1. A street legal version would be nice. ZR 572. I’d have a licence plate, quick silver if I got the silver color!
