A coalition of 11 U.S. states, including California, has filed a lawsuit against President Donald Trump over the termination of the Golden State’s authority to enforce its own emissions standards and ban the sale of new gasoline-only vehicles by 2035. The lawsuit also takes aim at the EPA and EPA administrator Lee Zeldin.
The new legal action follows Trump’s signing of three resolutions that effectively dismantle key clean air rules approved during the Biden administration. The rules in question include California’s zero-emission vehicle mandate, as well as tighter diesel truck emissions regulations and new limits on nitrogen oxide emissions from heavy-duty and off-road equipment, per Reuters.
Trump argues that the rollback will help revive the U.S. automotive manufacturing sector and protect jobs. “We officially rescue the U.S. auto industry from destruction by terminating the California electric vehicle mandate once and for all,” Trump said on Thursday after signing the resolutions.
California Governor Gavin Newsom condemned the move, labeling it an attack on clean air and a step backward for U.S. innovation.
“Trump’s all-out assault on California continues,” Newsom said. “And this time he’s destroying our clean air and America’s global competitiveness in the process.”
Plaintiffs in the new lawsuit include California, Colorado, New York, New Jersey, Washington, and Massachusetts.
Notably, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) previously warned that using congressional resolutions to rescind the EPA waivers may violate legal norms.
Automakers have largely supported Trump’s actions. The Alliance for Automotive Innovation, which represents several major OEMs, including GM, Toyota, Stellantis, Volkswagen, and Hyundai, has argued that California’s rules fail to align with market realities. Alliance CEO John Bozzella welcomed the rollback, saying the rules threatened vehicle affordability and limited consumer choice.
Meanwhile, the legal and political battles surrounding EV policy continue to escalate. A separate House bill passed in May seeks to end the $7,500 federal EV tax credit, while also slashing EV battery production incentives by 2028. Another proposal seeks to remove penalties for automakers that fail to meet federal fuel economy requirements.
Some lawsuit plaintiffs claim the L87 issues will hurt resale value.
Including the refreshed Tracker and Onix.
Only 7,128 Olds Super 88s were built for the model year.

How nice to see my NJ tax dollars are going into useless causes like this instead of proper energy upgrades like replacing the aging High Pressure Sodium street lights with LEDs. More proof this all about using tax payer money for useless agenda driven causes instead of actual investments that make sense
If only our governors fought this hard to make New Jerseyans lives more affordable instead of the opposite. Fight so hard for cars nobody wants nor can afford
The states suing the Trump administration have missed the boat! Congress passed legislation outlawing any state dictating EVs and ICE emissions! It’s a law now…!!!
I just don't get it. Why would anyone, no matter political party affiliation, gender, sexual preference, race or religion, want to stop vehicles from being cleaner? Put all the political fluff aside for a moment, please. Just simply look at this from a logical point of view.
How does keeping stricter emissions NEGATIVELY affect anyone?
Doesn't everyone want or prefer cleaner air?
Does anyone really prefer asthma, lung cancer, major eye irritation, etc?
This is just the current Trump GOP doing stuff that hurts everyone and for what reason?
What's not to get? Is it too much to ask for life to be affordable? These cars are an absurd $10k more than their ICE counterparts for less capability. Only for our governors to force them down our throats and not give us a choice to buy more affordable ICE or hybrid options. And to add insult to injury, they are still wasting taxpayer dollars on taking this to court rather than addressing other more immediate issues such as crime. Did Dems ever stop and think that maybe, just maybe, this is one of the reason they lost this presidential election? The complete disregard to Americans begging for more affordable prices for them to be issuing costly policies? People don't give two craps about their cars being clean when many don't bother to even wash them. They want affordable transportation along with every other necessity to be affordable.
Huh?
"People don’t give two craps about their cars being clean when many don’t bother to even wash them."
Pretty sure they mean clean air, not the exterior.
You know what I meant. It was meant to be a joke but the fact stands. Most drivers if given a choice would pick affordability over their cars being good for the environment at a premium. Especially when cars are a necessity and not a luxury like a select few places like NYC pr Chicago.
Try harder not that funny.
When you miss the sarcasm it’s best to pretend it’s the other guy’s fault, oh yes, it’s very normal.
Is it too much to ask for all Americans to have the right to breathe clean air? You can’t be forced to drive an EV but every American can be forced to suffer because you don’t care about the environment.
Is it too much to ask that people be allowed to buy what they want with the money they earn?
If it was up to dems the clean air you breath would be taxed.
If you buy and drive a "clean" Hummer EV or any other electric vehicle and operate it in GM's hometown of Detroit, it really isn't all that clean. DTE's power grid is supplied mostly by coal (about 50 percent) with natural gas second at about 20 percent and the 9,400 pound Hummer consumes a massive amount of that carbon-based energy to move it around. I have always said that a sensibly-sized ICE vehicle burning gasoline is better for the environment than one of GM's electric monstrosities in most parts of the country. And in Detroit, even the humble little Bolt is indirectly spewing coal so I doubt it's really better for the environment than a Civic.
There's absolutely no guarantee that even if all the ICE vehicles were taken off the road and replaced with EVs that the air would be any cleaner and that people would be healthier. About the only thing these mandates would guarantee is higher vehicle prices, more unemployment, and brown/black outs. A lot of these liberal woke states have more pressing issues such as crime, surges of illegal immigrants, high taxes, etc- things that contribute to a lower quality of life than people driving the vehicles they want.
Open your eyes and mind. Other parts of the world make EV's work. Your evil enemy is doing a great job at it.
Other parts of the world like Europe have fully integrated and better public transit systems and less distances to cover. In Europe, you don’t have to own a car. It’s essentially a luxury to own one. The same applies to other Asian countries like Japan.
As for China, with their mass distances much like the US? How do they make it work? Well there, what the government says, goes. PERIOD. It doesn’t matter if it’s a good idea or not but you dare NOT say anything against it or you will find yourself in a re-education program faster than you know what hit you. That is a dystopian society I do not wish to experience ever.
To add to that, China powers those EVs with electricity from coal fired power plants- several of which are added every WEEK.
The boys over here like to down vote. There not as sweet as TFL.
why the north americans do not want gasoline cars after 2035 ? are usa people intelligent ?
Only 11 out of 50, BFD. Cali doesn't rule the world but sadly a few other places try to follow their lead.
Perhaps people will be allowed to steal up to $1k of merchandise in the store and use the streets as toilets like the politicians in Cali allow.
I want electric to win, but in order to win it must be 1) affordable 2) reliable 3) safe 4) superior to ICE in range.
AND We don't want anything Mandated on us. Period! We will vote Them people out.
The one thing that no one has stated is that more pollution occurs in mining and making batteries than is save over the life of an EV. People should have the right to choice what they want to spend their money on. If EV's ever get practical people will buy them.
Who is going to fight Climate Change. Not Trump.
Who is going to stave off Lethal Pandemics and Diseases. Not Kennedy.
Who is going to plant, grow and pick our fruit and vegetables. Not Noem.
Who is going to keep the country safe. Not Hegseth.
They are all egomaniacal, power hungry lemmings (idiots).
How is it possible that such unqualified folks are even remotely allowed to be even near the organizations they currently lead. Absolutely unfathomable.
Today Trump joins a long list of Dictators with the "I've got the biggest" parade.
To claim that he is honoring our troops is an absolute joke. Honor Vets by treating them like the heros they are not turning your back on them.
Wake up folks.
And Brandon/Kackles Administration did such a wonderful job on controlling inflation, securing our border, making the US energy independent, protecting our manufacturing base, standing up to unfair trade practices, and protecting our nation against foreign threats. Well at least they let boys be able to use our daughter's locker rooms and compete in girls' sports. Speaking of dictators, Brandon/Kackles did a great job in dictating what vehicles and appliances we are to buy with our own money.
As if anyone is going to do anything to “climate change?” “Fight” climate change is a good term though, it doesn’t even imply that anything will be improved. And as far as it goes the entire air pollution hype and the idea it’s causing global climate change is one of the most idiotic things anyone ever came up with. And to think they teach it in school as a sort of “vaccination against republicans”. It really is too bad, the ability to think is cool but apparently almost nonexistent and not necessary anymore…
As far as “lethal pandemics” the last one weren’t near bad enough to get the population under control, haha
The utter level of ignorance on this site (Tigger, 85ZingoGTR just to point out two) is beyond anything I could ever imagine. In my comment, I said NOTHING about EV's. I asked several logical questions.
The fact that you two and maybe a few others can't even understand is sad. You can't even understand what's literally in the air you breath because you can't see it.
This GMA site has become a cesspool that's yellow and filled with everything wrong with America today.
ignorance is believing everything the left and its media feed to you......
They are pretty raw. Constantly whining about everything. Scary Mary, Brandon/Kackles blah blah blah.
Bottom line at the end of the day is EVs are not making the world cleaner as they need mined elements for their batteries, and lots of energy to make and if you count solar and turbines the lesson gets even worse. For every coal fired plant we shut down China and India build 10! Why is America rapping their citizens and their land to conform to a Globalist agenda? Carbon Dioxide is not a pollutant. Our plants and forests need it to survive. The world has been warming since the ice age people. The polar cap actually grew. You don’t have to be an engineer to figure this out but I am one and I can tell you, this BS is not a value add. Buy what you want and can afford. The government has no business in how you spend your money! Here in this beautiful Republic, the government doesn’t give you your God given rights. They are only here to protect them. God bless and go out and enjoy your life!
Further proof-positive that the DemocRAT Government and voters in those 11 States are total Idiots.
How many actually own EV's? Probably none.
