U.S. Congress Moving To Eliminate Biden-Era Tire Manufacturing Emissions Rules

Tire manufacturing is about to become a dirtier business – at least from an environmental standpoint – as the U.S Congress puts Biden-era emissions rules for tire production in the crosshairs for elimination.

According to The Detroit News, the EPA created new rules for U.S. tire manufacturing emissions at the eleventh hour in November 2024 under the oversight of the outgoing Biden administration.

Joe Biden whose administration called for the tire manufacturing rules.

The rule fell under the National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants, which generally sets standards for processes with a high risk of direct harm to human health. These include asbestos production, the manufacture of asphalt roofing, refining of petroleum products, and similar chemical manufacturing.

While tire manufacturing produces volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and particulate matter, the main reason for the new rule appears to have been curbing greenhouse gas emissions. This gave opponents of the rule the angle they needed to challenge it an ultimately succeed in its upcoming elimination – the National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants focus mostly on human health, and the health risks of tire manufacturing are claimed to be relatively slight, particularly compared to asbestos or certain highly toxic regulated chemicals.

Goodyear and Michelin are two major U.S. manufacturers likely to be affected by the rule.

Goodyear tire manufacturing was affected by the rule.

“The rubber tire manufacturing emission standard utilized questionable emissions data and pointed to negligible health benefits as justification for the rule,” Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-Virginia), one of the architects of the resolution to axe the new standard, said. One of his colleagues, Senator Tim Scott (R-South Carolina) remarked that the rule “was based on questionable data and imposes onerous one-size-fits-all pollution controls.”

On the other side of the question, Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-Rhode Island) spoke of the Trump administration’s “endless quest to accommodate the countries’ biggest polluters” and added the deregulation will cause “particular harm to American children whose lungs and brains, still developing, are most vulnerable to the effects of these pollutants.”

President Donald Trump.

The resolution to eliminate the tire manufacturing emissions rule passed both the House and Senate and will now go to U.S. President Donald Trump for signing.

  1. I guess for the party that wants people (certain people) to have as many kids as they can, increasing pollution, communicable diseases, lower health care coverage, etc.. It all makes sense, let god sort it out. It’s not our job to manage the environment. If you have six kids and lose a couple, so what? You have backups.

    1. Please provide us with the data on how eliminating the Biden rules will affect human health.
Unless your opinion is based on Senator Sheldon “Stolen Valor” Whitehouse.

        1. These same leftoids also made claims that we would be entering an ice age, that Florida would be under water, that we would be burnt up and gone in a few years, that we would run out of oil soon and many other wild conspiracy theories. Not one has come true yet here we are still believing what they say. Oh how special!

    3. Virtue Signaling in the part of the left is cute if someone has to pay for it. In this case it would be the American worker with their jobs. The left and idiots like Biden, Harris, and Newsome don’t realize that if it costs too much to make a tire in Ohio or South Carolina because of draconian regulations, they will just move to a country where there are no such regulations and to boot they can pay slave labor wages. The net result is less jobs here and more pollution globally.

These virtue signaling regulations will have ZERO effect unless every nation in the world adopts them and they are followed to a t.
