To facilitate moving passenger vehicles of all kinds from one point to another, including one-way transport – for instance, when moving to another home – U-Haul now offers a 16-foot Toy Hauler for rent that is capable of hauling up to 6,800 pounds.
The new U-Haul Toy Hauler is a flatbed trailer that attaches to a 2-inch hitch ball and includes numerous features to make it useful for transporting everything from motorcycles and ATVs to full-size SUVs like the Chevy Suburban or Cadillac Escalade.
The U-Haul trailer is equipped with a trio of loading ramps and includes drive-over fenders on its wheels. It has rails and many tie-down points to enable securing vehicles of various shapes and sizes for short or long-distance transport. Vehicle security chains are also included.
Renting the U-Haul Toy Hauler can be done either for local transport or longer, one-direction hauling. Pricing and availability may vary by location as well as the distance to be traveled and the time involved.
The Toy Hauler can be pulled by a properly equipped customer vehicle or behind one of U-Haul’s moving trucks. The rental company provides information and advice on the use of the hauler when the item is being rented for use.
The hauler can carry vehicles up to 8 feet, 2 inches wide, the distance between its rails. The deck length, as noted, is 16 feet, while the deck height measures 19 inches. It has a total empty weight of 3,165 pounds.
As a reminder, while many GM vehicles, including its pickups and SUVs, are equipped for towing, this should be avoided for new vehicles for an initial break-in period of 500 miles of driving. Failing to do can result in damage to the engine, axles, or other critical parts.
Beyond this initial break-in period, GM vehicles used for towing should not be driven at higher speeds than 50 miles per hour during an additional 500-mile period. Certain items of driver assistance and safety technology should be switched off and full-throttle starts avoided during this period.
The U-Haul Toy Hauler is currently available for rental and use.
Comments
This is a new design, but U-Haul has rented car haulers for years. The issue I’ve always had with them is the empty weight. I’ve never hauled a car that weighed much over 3000 pounds. Not sure what the empty weight of the old design was but it’s probably similar to this one-3165 pounds. My truck could easily pull it loaded but that’s not the point. Wish they had trailers for lighter loads too.
Their current trailers are too short. I rented one a few months ago for an older truck with a 131″ wheel base (standard cab, 8 foot bed) and the back wheels were just on the trailer, with everything past the wheel hanging off the back of the trailer. With all the crew cab and extended cab trucks, the trailer isn’t enough. At 6800 capacity it is still too limited. My 2023 Silverado 2500 weights 7000 lbs unloaded and it is a gas engine; diesels are another 1000 lbs, so they are too heavy for these trailers.
Someone needs to look up the TOY HAULER definition
These ‘toy haulers’ should also have a stone guard on the leading top (vertical) edge of the trailer deck. Mud flaps on the tow vehicle are not enough. You are forewarned!
The small stones and gravel, etc. will sand blast your finish on whatever you are towing including RV campers.
