Reuters reports that President Donald Trump and United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer have struck a trade deal that both leaders are touting as beneficial to their respective economies. It’s the first new U.S. trade deal of its kind since Trump declared sweeping reciprocal tariffs on “Liberation Day” in April. It’s estimated that the average import duties on products imported to the UK from the U.S. have dropped from 5.1 percent to 1.8 percent.
The trade deal drops the tariff rate for cars imported from the UK to the U.S. from 27.5 percent down to 10 percent, and the 25 percent steel tariff is eliminated entirely for the UK. Conversely, the British 19 percent tariff on American ethanol is dropped to zero.
Trump said the two allied nations “made a good deal” and that “it opens up a tremendous market for us.” “This is a really fantastic, historic day,” Starmer told reporters. “This is going to boost trade between and across our countries, it’s going to not only protect jobs, but create jobs, opening market access.”
The American Automakers Policy Council (AAPC), which represents GM, Ford, and Stellantis, is displeased with the UK trade deal. Here’s the full statement from AAPC president and former Missouri governor Matt Blunt: “The U.S. automotive industry is highly integrated with Canada and Mexico; the same is not true for the U.S. and UK. We are disappointed that the administration prioritized the UK ahead of our North American partners. Under this deal, it will now be cheaper to import a UK vehicle with very little U.S. content than a USMCA-compliant vehicle from Mexico or Canada that is half American parts. This hurts American automakers, suppliers, and autoworkers. We hope this preferential access for UK vehicles over North American ones does not set a precedent for future negotiations with Asian and European competitors.”
Trump has expressed that this deal will be a blueprint for negotiations with other countries. He said countries with higher trade surpluses with the United States could pay much higher tariffs than the ones outlined in the deal with the UK.

Eh, it looks to me like the UK was serious about being partners with the US and Canada and Mexico aren’t.
They prefer taxing their own people more than make a trade deal and eliminate or lower tariffs altogether. Makes sense considering Carney is allied with Dems. The tax you harder party of the US.
The only ones the GOP wants to lower taxes for is the very wealthy.
The felon’s tariff plan would raise taxes on US citizens by about $1 trillion dollars.
How effing out of touch are you that you still think the Dems aren’t in bed with more billionaires and also the 3 companies that own over 50% of the shares in the S&P 500? What a dumbarse.
Yeah and those same three treasonous companies are heavily invested in…you guessed it…China. Now, suddenly seeing Gavin Newsom brownosing to BYD makes ALOT of sense.
This is why I say when open season comes for Taiwan, I want to see if the hunter will get the same condemnation that Russia rightfully received from Ukraine.
My health insurance rates nearly quadrupled since the “Affordable” Care Act was passed. And this was before the inflation they caused during the pandemic. If you think dems give a rats @** for the working American, you should take on a job as a stand up comedian.
And to add to Johns point, and mine, the health insurance companies have dems in their pockets. As proof by how passing the ACA shot up my rates. But yet they claimed they would lower prices as they would compete with eachother and that we could keep our doctors as icing on the cake. What a joke. They allowed the fool in the White House at the time to pass it and colluded with price hikes. Literally quadrupled once it was passed.
Also, don’t tell anybody, but if tariffs were lowered in the end, that saves consumers in both countries money. *Shh*.
Yeah don’t tell anyone that the UK has a LOWER TARIFF RATE THAT THE UNITED STATES BEFORE AND AFTER THIS TRADE DEAL. ***shhhhhh*** don’t tell anyone that MULTIPLE COUNTRIES LEVIED TARIFFS ON DID NOT EVEN HAVE A TARIFF ON THE UNITED STATES AT ALL.
GM should build in the US and not Mexico, Canada…CHYNA, etc. Either that, or name change to Global Motors.
As the article states, Cory, it is now CHEAPER to import vehicles from the UK even when comparing to vehicles THAT ARE MADE IN THE UNITED STATES.
We should be encouraging other companies to build in the US. Like the Biden era IRA incentives are working to do. Helping Canada and Mexico are biggest trade partners and friendlies neighbors any country has ever had is a good thing.
who is interested in Alcatraz, a bird nest refugium ?
Like the UK exports so many vehicles to the US. It doesn’t. It exports FAR more other goods. Why is Orange Head so over obsessed with vehicle tariffs?
So, there’s now comparable tariff costs on most US-made vehicles (due to parts from Mex/Can) as on UK-made Mini’s and Land Rovers? Am I getting this right?
Tariffs are Trumps way of evening the playing field!! It’s gets countries to the negotiating table and gets the United States of America back on track. Im sick and tired of claiming to be a super power, yet all other countries “own” us or tell us what to do and not to do. It’s ok fornthem to tariffs us our of our @$$ but we can’t??? Wake up and see he is doing this for our country. Finally a president with some b@lls. #MAGA
If people really cared about trade deficit they would stop shopping at Walmart, Target, Sheen, Temo, cheap products on Amazon, etc. That would instantly fixed the trade deficit.
Your brainwashed, there are much better ways to negotiate with trading partners.
‘ for them’
‘Out of our’
Drill baby drill
What is Detroit so upset about? The only cars we get from the UK are Jaguars, Land Rovers, Rolls-Royce, Bentleys, and Aston Martins (I can’t even say Lotus anymore because they are coming from China now). Basically all exotic cars with JLR as the exception and Cadillac outsells them in the US. Are they afraid Rolls-Royce will now outsell Chevrolets because they will have smaller tariffs?
