The Overland Expo used the GMC Sierra HD AT4X AEV Edition as the basis of this year’s Ultimate Overland Build. Its off-road capability and matching style make this full-size pickup a no-brainer as a jumping-off point for the ultimate overlanding rig.

The Sierra HD AT4X AEV Edition has the same two engine options as the rest of the Sierra HD lineup, and Overland Expo went with the 6.6L V8 L5P turbodiesel Duramax mill, producing 470 horsepower and 975 pound-feet of torque. The Allison-branded 10-speed automatic transmission routes power to all four wheels. Some of the stock off-road upgrades on this truck include stamped steel bumpers and skid plates, fender flares, and an electronic locking rear differential.
The first round of upgrades came from none other than AEV, which gave this truck an upfit package for more serious off-roading. It includes AEV Salta XD wheels sized 18×9 with a +18mm offset, a 37-inch tire clearance kit, 17-inch BFGoodrich All-Terrain K02 tires, a ComeUp SOLO 12.5rs winch, an AEV snorkel, a prototype front bumper light bar with four 6-inch Vision X Explora lights, and an AEV paint appearance package.
Other mechanical upgrades to the truck include a Magnaflow stainless steel exhaust system and an Air Lift LoadLifter 5000 Pro Series kit with a WirelessOne air compressor.
But what really makes this truck an overlander is what’s going on in the bed. It’s an OEV Back Country pop-up truck camper with insulated composite walls making it suitable for four-season use. All of the expected amenities are in there, like a 20-gallon freshwater tank, a water heater, a cabin air heater, a solar panel, a shower cube, and all of the kitchen necessities. It even comes with a portable campfire, a knife set, and an axe/shovel multi-tool.
Full-size vans like the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and Ford Transit are often associated with overlanding vehicles, so it’s cool to see an HD pickup truck get a thorough overlanding treatment. We agree that the GMC Sierra HD AT4X AEV Edition is the perfect platform for such a rig.
