Saab 9-3 Towed Backwards, Flails Like A Fast & Furious Reject: Video

A recent viral video has hit the web capturing a Ford SUV towing a Saab 9-3 convertible in reverse, resulting in the drop-top Saab swinging back and forth across multiple lanes on the highway.

The wild scene apparently played out in Houston, Texas on the North Loop near Ella Boulevard. Several local news outlets reported on the story.

Saab 9-3 swings wildly back and forth on the freeway.

Multiple eyewitnesses managed to capture the incident on video, each showing a white Ford Expedition towing a blue Saab 9-3 with a chain. The chain was apparently hooked up to the rear of the Ford, then connected to the rear of the Saab.

Obviously, this is a less-than-ideal setup, especially at highway speeds. Towing the Saab in reverse resulted in the convertible swinging back and forth behind the Ford in a cloud of tire smoke. In addition, a driver was seated in the Saab, possibly in an attempt to keep the convertible tracking straight – a task that seems impossible, looking at the video.

Eyewitnesses described the incident as hugely reckless, with the convertible swerving wildly across multiple lanes of traffic and nearly colliding with concrete barriers.

“It was like a Fast & Furious movie, or something,” one eyewitness comments.

Witnesses also report that the SUV driver was laughing as the convertible swayed unpredictably across the freeway.

Despite the obvious danger of the stunt, no injuries were reported. However, the Saab 9-3 suffered a good deal of damage, including a broken axle and a popped tire. Another eyewitness apparently observed a heated argument between the two drivers after the two-vehicle caravan pulled off the highway. The man in the convertible angrily confronted the SUV driver, accusing her of damaging his car and hitting the hood in frustration.

While it’s unclear if a citation was issued for the reckless towing, the man in the convertible was apparently arrested on an out-of-state warrant.

To note, GM acquired a 50-percent stake in Saab in 1989, increasing ownership to 100 percent in 2000. GM sold the brand to Spyker in 2010.
