Amazon Prime Video is set to drop American Thunder: NASCAR to Le Mans on June 12th, just two days before the launch of the 2025 24 Hours of Le Mans.
The new feature-length documentary chronicles NASCAR’s recent stint at the iconic endurance event in 2023, providing an in-depth look at team and the car that stole the spotlight.
For those that may have missed it, a group of NASCAR heavyweights fielded a modified Chevy Camaro ZL1 stock car in the Garage 56 racing class for the event’s 100th anniversary, challenging some of Europe’s most advanced racing machines with a thick slice of U.S.-bred speed. The effort was backed by Hendrick Motorsports and led by seasoned names like seven-time NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson, Formula 1 World Champion Jenson Button, and Le Mans winner Mike Rockenfeller.
Thanks to its unique sound and style, the specially prepped Camaro ZL1 became an instant fan favorite in France, roaring down the Mulsanne Straight with a thunderous V8 soundtrack and standing out in a field littered with sleek prototypes and GT machines. Over the course of the race, the Camaro managed to run as high as 27th overall, even outpacing the GTE-Am class for a significant stretch. Although a driveline issue eventually put the car back in the pits, the team, led by longtime NASCAR crew chief Chad Knaus, repaired the problem and got the car back on track, setting a fast lap of 3:50.512 in the process.
The Garage 56 Camaro ultimately finished 39th overall after completing 285 laps. However, simply finishing the 24 Hours of Le Mans is itself an achievement, and watching the stock car dice it up among the prototypes and GT machines at the Circuit de la Sarthe is a surefire delight for motorsport fans of every stripe.
American Thunder is directed by Brad Lockhart and produced by NASCAR Studios, Griffin Van Malssen, Jeff Gordon, Tim Clark, John Dahl, Amy Anderson, Tally Hair, and Matt Summers.
