Representing the Bow Tie’s mid-size pickup offering, the 2025 Chevy Colorado truck introduces several changes and updates for the model year, including retirement of one previously offered powerplant option. With only a single engine left, here’s our detailed look at its towing capabilities.
Gone from the 2025 Chevy Colorado engine bay is the formerly available turbocharged 2.7L I4Â L2R gasoline engine rated at 237 horsepower and 259 pound-feet of torque. The only remaining engine is the Turbo High-Output 2.7L I4 L3B engine developing maximum output of 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque.
This engine is paired with the GM 8-speed automatic transmission, while the pickup’s drivetrains continue to include two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive.
The axle ratio for the 2025 Chevy Colorado is 3.42 regardless of drivetrain configuration.
Now that we know what engine option is available to power the 2025 Chevy Colorado while it tows loads, let’s look at a summary of towing capacities for the truck:

GM’s usual towing recommendations apply to the 2025 Chevy Colorado, including driving a brand-new truck for 500 miles at a minimum before even attempting to tow. Following this break-in period, the pickup should get its first oil change. Then, an additional towing break-in should take place, with the first 500 miles of towing carried out at 50 mph or under with no full-throttle starts.
These precautions help to prevent damage to the engine, axles, or other parts of the Colorado. Drive should be used for towing unless Tow/Haul drive mode is available. The following ADAS (advanced driver assistance system) tech should be switched off while towing, if present:
- Park Assist
- Automatic Parking Assist
- Reverse Automatic Braking
- Rear Cross Traffic Alert
- Rear Cross Traffic Braking
- Lane Change Alert
- Adaptive Cruise Control
As a reminder, the 2025 Colorado is underpinned by the updated 31XX-2 platform. Production takes place at GM’s Wentzville Assembly Plant in Missouri, where the GMC Canyon, the Chevy Express and the GMC Savana also roll off the assembly line.
