GM CEO Mary Barra Tops Fortune Most Powerful Women List Again

For the second year in a row and the fifth time overall, GM Chair and CEO Mary Barra has topped Fortune’s list of 100 Most Powerful Women (MPW) for 2025. Now in its 28th year, this annual list ranks the 100 most powerful women in the business world “reflecting corporations’ global scope and the nature of executives’ work, which spans the planet.”

GM CEO Mary Barra.

The methodology for the Fortune MPW list is based on five criteria: the size and health of an executive’s business, her career trajectory, her influence outside her organization, and how she wields her power. This is the fifth time Mary Barra has been number one on this list, also getting the top spot in 2024, 2021, 2017, and 2015. Although not number one every time, Barra has earned a spot on this list every year since 2014, when she became GM’s CEO.

Fortune says after dealing with the COVID-induced supply chain crisis, autoworker strikes, and the Cruise debacle, the second Trump administration’s trade agenda “puts her leadership to the ultimate test.” The magazine praises Barra for GM’s stock price only dipping four percent amid tariff uncertainty.

Fortune highlights some of GM’s wins throughout 2024, like its record revenue up nine percent compared to 2023, doubling its electric vehicle market share in the United States market, and, into 2025, ramping up domestic manufacturing as part of a broader strategy to manage the costs of new tariffs.

“GM’s future success may hinge on Barra’s ability to run a tight ship during a volatile political moment while staying innovative,” says Fortune.

In last year’s honors, Fortune praised Mary Barra for her long tenure as CEO of GM. She hit her 11-year mark in the top job this year, while the average tenure for a Fortune 500 CEO is 7.2 years for men and 4.5 years for women. She’s been the Chair and CEO of GM even longer than Roger B. Smith, who was CEO for nine years and Chairman for 10 back in the 80s and 90s.

Other women toward the top of Fortune’s MPW list for 2024 include Accenture CEO Julie Sweet, Citigroup CEO Jane Fraser, and AMD CEO Lisa Su.

  4. Barf!! Ever since she took over GM has become stagnant. They don’t offer anything exciting except the corvette and now have made that car out of most peoples price range. So sad. The C6, C7 were affordable sports cars that many high middle class people could own.….sad

    And now no Camaro?!?! Pathetic.

    1. cant agree more, all they made are big old suv buses, or crapbox 4 cylinder plastic boxes. Hardly any coupes or sedans. They ve become the Sunbeam appliances of the auto industry. Have been driving GM all my life, next go around, if she doesnt change the line up,it wont be a GM vehicle. Not everyone wants a ugly, wheezy, 4 cylinder, front drive crap hauler suv.

  6. “Most overpaid woman” more like it. She has basically downgraded gM to a boring irrelevant brand of crossovers and trucks with fat price tags and unreliable V8 engines. Even worse you literally can’t walk into a Chevy dealer and buy that thing called a sedan, a stick shift transmission, an affordable sport coupe or convertible and so many more product holes it’s insane. Lack of interior colors, poor quality, lack of choice, Buick as an irrelevant brand of only crossovers and now Cadillac as overpriced EV only toys makes gM look like idiots. Ford isn’t much better but at least had the sense to keep its ICE Mustang in both convertible and coupe form and offers its customers hybrid, pHEV and optional higher output engines nlike much of gM’s corrovers. Pathetic

    1. Spot on. GM has abandoned the consumers that have made them what they are. Don’t forget that she said that “GM is a software company now”. She is 100% in on the future being autonomous EVs. What’s the saying about eggs and baskets?

Folks, go get a Blackwing now if you can.

        1. Especially when Barra spent tens of billions of dollars in stock buybacks to artificially prop up the price of the stock while the product lineup has been pruned down to nothing but trucks and soulless appliance- like crossovers.

After 5yrs still can’t build the Corvette in a timely manner, there seems to be a recall or problem issue notice every week across the board and my stock price only changes about $2 either way for the past 20yrs not to mention trying to stuff EV’s down our thriats that no one wants. And she’s grest again -why???

  13. Killed off a full-sized luxury sedan in the US, but developed it in the US for China. Killed off the affordable full-sized family sedan of the Impala, killed off the Camaro by making it out of reach for the people who want a fun sporty coupe and gives us nothing but boring CUV’s, SUV’s, a pickup truck for everyone who thinks they need it to take to a sports practice, least we forget the EV’s that no one wants and how about the Celestiq sedan that only the ultra-rich can afford, but don’t want. Buick is on life support, unless you are in China. She thinks a luxury sedan is a CT4 or CT5 that cannot fit 4 people, but let’s price them sky high to see what we can suck out of people.

I’ve had GM products for 58 years, starting with a Camaro and finishing now with a Cadillac CT6 and everything in between, Buick, Oldsmobile and GMC. If we have to replace the CT6, I’ll be shopping for a full-sized ICE sedan.

  16. Lots of the usual “I personally don’t like what GM [insert gripe here] is doing, so the whole company must therefore be [insert my opinion here], and it’s all Barra’s fault’. The reality, as measured by data, not opinion, is of course the opposite. Which is why you never see data, e.g.sales, market share, eps, revenue, earnings, etc, with any of those opinions because it won’t back up the talk. So the talk can be ignored.
