GM Canada Claims It Ranks #1 In EV Sales

Via social media, GM Canada recently stated that it was the #1 seller in electric vehicles in the country, surpassing every other automaker including Tesla.

We reached out to the automaker for clarification, and a spokesperson said that the claim is “based on Canadian vehicle registration data for Q4 2024 and Q1 2025,” and that “the data shows GM as the #1 EV seller in Canada over that period.”

GM did record strong EV sales during those two quarters. In Q4 2024, the Chevy Equinox EV led the way in deliveries, followed by the Chevy Blazer EV and the Cadillac Lyriq. In Q1 2025, Equinox EV remained the top-selling GM EV, while Chevy Silverado EV sales remained stable and the newly available Cadillac Optiq recorded a decent first quarter as well.

General Motors sold a combined total of 15,282 electric vehicles in the fourth quarter of 2024, and 5,750 EVs in the first quarter of this year. This despite the Canadian government halting its iZEV rebate program in February, while the Québec government also paused its own incentive program between February and April 1st.

As in the case in the United States, Tesla does not publish sales numbers in Canada. However, the province of Québec is the biggest market for EVs in Canada, and according to a recent report from Global News, Tesla registrations in Québec dropped by from 5,097 units in Q4 2024 to just 524 units in Q1 2025, a staggering 90-percent drop. Equinox EV and Blazer EV sales also tanked during the quarter as potential buyers delayed their purchase until Québec injected new funds into its EV rebate program.

Looking ahead, the federal government is currently evaluating whether it will restart its iZEV program, while British Colombia ended its own CleanBC Go Electric Passenger Vehicle Rebate Program on May 15th, 2025. In Québec, EV buyers benefit from a rebate of up to $4,000 until December 31st, 2025, and up to $2,000 From January 1st to December 31st, 2026, before its provincial incentive program is phased out.

Meanwhile, GM’s EV lineup will continue to grow this year with the arrival of the Cadillac Escalade IQL, the Cadillac Lyriq-V and the Cadillac Vistiq, while the upcoming 2026 Chevy Bolt EV is expected to debut before the end of 2025.

  1. The only question I have is whether GM is making any money on EV sales. We have watched this movie before where being first in sales resulted in going bankrupt..

    1. They have affirmed as much on multiple occasions in the past two quarters.

And regardless, they have plenty of cash flow from their ICE operations to continue capital investment in their EV capacity.

    2. Look back to 2000 when Toyota released the Prius to international markets. The company admitted that they lost several million dollars to start up the international line – and GM responded by saying it spent about that much just on marketing. Which company made the better investment then? I’d say that today GM is trying to take the long view a la the Japanese and lose during the initial roll-out to gain over the future.

    1. No. GM is making profits on all EV sales.

      1. GM may be, but it’s dealer network is losing a lot of money on them.

  3. But are they profitable sales? I seriously doubt it.

      1. Haha last year silly little bot.

The truth as come to light it’s all vapor and fraud. This was evident 10 years ago but thankfully hes shown his true colors.

Anyone buying one now is just supporting a nazi and that’s not the people who bought them in the first place. Biggest brand damage ever.

        1. Let’s recap. The lefties worshiped Musk when he showed the world how to build and sell EVs, and were by-far the largest group purchasing Teslas. Then over the last year, worship turned to hate, when Elon’s views differed from theirs.
Now the lefties advocate for vandalizing Teslas, driven mostly by lefties. LOL Priceless.
