Duncan Aldred Promoted To GM Vice-President Of North America

After a brief stint as General Motors Vice President of Global Commercial Growth Strategies and Operations, Duncan Aldred has been shifted to a powerful new role as GM senior VP and president of North America.

Aldred is no stranger to the higher levels of General Motors executive authority, having previously served for over ten years as Global Vice President of Buick and GMC.

Aldred will oversee operations in The General’s biggest market, North America, with Rory Harvey, the automaker’s Global Markets executive VP and president, as his immediate superior. In his immediately preceding role, Duncan Aldred oversaw GM Energy, the commercial fleet branch of the company GM Envolve, OnStar, and an assortment of sales and digital operations.

In his new position, Aldred will possess “a clear mandate to build on GM’s sales momentum, to continue to leverage the industry’s most comprehensive vehicle portfolio, and to respond with agility to a rapidly changing external environment” according to Rory Harvey. Harvey also said Aldred will continue to expand the “strategy to offer our customers around the world unrivaled choice across our ICE and EV portfolio, from brands they love and trust.”

For his part, Aldred remarked that “GM is in a strong position in North America” because it has, according to him, “the best and broadest portfolio in the business.” He also identified the automaker’s customer service as one of its key strengths and praised the employees making these advantages possible.

Prior to Aldred’s current appointment, Rory Harvey was responsible for both global and North American operations. This followed the departure of the previous GM North America President Marissa West last August after just eight months on the job, though she had previously spent 20 years at The General in a variety of other roles.

The complex reshuffle results from an ongoing effort by General Motors to streamline and rationalize the upper echelons of its leadership. Duncan Aldred will take up his duties as lead of North American operations immediately.
