Chevy Silverado, GMC Sierra Software Update Gives GM Trucks New Feature: Video

My 2025 GMC Sierra greeted me with a pleasant surprise this evening: a software update.

Named Vehicle Update N25-250520, the update is available for 2024 and 2025 model years of full-size GM trucks – the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups – and enables the active cabin ventilation feature, which turns on the HVAC blower when the vehicle’s windows are remotely lowered using the key fob (by pressing once and then holding the door unlock button for a few seconds).

Delivered entirely over-the-air (OTA), the update takes a maximum of 15 minutes to install and requires that the GM truck remains parked and turned off during the update.

A few choices are available to install the update, including installing now, scheduling the update to be installed at a specific time or reminding the driver about the update at a later time. There’s also the option to forego the update entirely via the Decline button.

Note that starting the update means that the vehicle cannot be driven or turned on, so make sure to park in a secure location during installation. Additionally, various vehicle features such as door locks, windows, and waning chimes may not work. And, perhaps most importantly, locked doors may not unlock, so be sure not to lock passengers if you leave the vehicle.

I initiated the update on my 2025 Sierra 1500 AT4, and it completed within about five minutes. Upon trying it out, all four windows rolled down I couldn’t hear the blower motor initiate – so I’ll try it again soon and report back.

Regardless, this update for the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra was quite a nice surprise. It’s small but important updates and improvements like these that OTA updates should be used for – for surprising and delighting owners.

Pro tip: if you don’t get the notification that a software update is available, you can always force the truck to check for it manually by going to Settings > Updates > Check For Updates.

  1. How difficult would it be for them to push an OTA that unlocks harmless modules for us to program ourselves? Like allowing us to reprogram the window switches so that the express down can stop at designated points.

    1. The problem is they dont want to deal with fixing problems people create and then expect GM to fix it with a car under warranty as they should not have to. If the warranty is up and they open it up for dabling then your on your own.

      1. Actually, the community is more effective at fixing issues. We just need access.

  2. I’ve never remotely rolled down my windows ever, and probably will never need to. How about worrying about the other IMPORTANT gliches in the electronics, like why I have to keep changing the XM stations to get sound to come on? It’s been to the dealership once for a software flash, to no avail…

    1. Let them try twice more and when it doesn’t work then, force them to buy it back. Three strikes and they’re out. Read the warranty.

  3. Why don’t they concentrate on the fundamentals? On this forum one reads about engine and fuel pump failures. This is just a geegaw. Cool down the interior by driving with the AC and open windows for a minute or two will ventilate the heated air. What I really want is an AC vent for my private area. My Chevette Scooter Limited Special Sport Edition had that.

    1. How many of these “Limited Special Sport Editions” did GM crank out? Bet they are real collectors vehicles. What color was the one that you had? What was the additional equipment added with that edition.

  4. Why can’t they do that for the 2022 and 2023 MY’s? Hell the My Chevrolet app doesn’t even show me the status of any OTA updates anymore. I guess that because GM f’ed it up so badly they don’t work on the earlier trucks?

  5. Would it be safe to say other than the 6.2 engine debacle, electronic glitches are a huge frustration with buyers. GM, learn this old lesson, less is more.

  6. Why not the 2023 also? It’s the same system. Come on GM. Stop being so stingy when there are other issues we have to contend with.

DRIVING AROUND IN MANUAL AND 5TH GEAR IS NOW ALMOST 2ND NATURE TO DEFEAT THE AFM. THE COST OF OIL CHANGE HAS DOUBLED IN TEN YEARS AT THE DEALERSHIP AND IS NOW $2OO. 10. How about giving vehicle owners the ability to record some/all of their vehicle’s cameras?
    A Plug & Play device.
Or send it to a cloud account.
Auto record & save after any impact..
Give the abilty to view vehicle cameras remotely on line so owners can monitor their vehicle’s use.

    1. get a data port lock. Thieves tie into the OBD port under dash to steal it. If the port is locked, they will just move on. They will not waste time trying to defeat the lock.

  12. Thanks Alex. Are you sure this is available for all models 2024 and 25 silverado’s?

    1. I’m only as sure as what the update notes say (see photos above).

I’m guessing you’re not seeing it on yours… right?

      1. right. I have 2024 LT. Purchased Jan. 2 2024. Not once have I had any OTA update arrive. I do have OTA updates “allowed”. Wondering if this update is for LTZ and up models. All windows down option via key fob does work though.

        1. Yup, I’m hearing a lot that not everyone got the update. Researching why and will circle back once I have something.

          1. I might have a clue as to why people are not seeing this update. My 2024 1500 LT radio (infotainment) software level was sitting at Android 10 level Y169.3.2. I took truck to dealer today to get it updated to Android 12, Build level Y175.5.2. This was done under GM Service bulletin 24-NA-261. Before the update, when I was at android 10 software level, I would search for updates on radio screen and it always said “up to date”.. 5 hours after having update done at dealer to Android 12, Build level Y175.5.2, I got a notice that a update was available. It was the one Alex talks about in this article. N25-250520. So, it seems to me you will not see this update on your vehicle if you are at Android level 10. You need to be at Android level 12 in order to see this update. I have no hard facts on this, all I know is what I have seen with my truck. Seems odd to me, right after I get updated to Android 12, that 5 hours later this HVAC update with key fob all windows down pops up.

          2. additional update. People must have under settings, update screen, the “allow updates in background” and “allow updates when WiFi is available” turned “off”. Truck will still run the update if tied to your home WiFi with these settings off.

          3. Why would you want to have “allow updates when WiFi is available” turned “off”

  17. Without the engine running and the AC compressor active blowing hot air out of the vents seems like a minimal benefit at best, why not just remote start and let the AC work for a few before jumping in? Now, if I can remote start it and then roll down the windows to let the AC blow the hot air out that might be different.

    Reply
    1. the Ac still works while in auto stop mode, so i’m sure the truck uses that “function” to turn on AC to blow cold air without truck running when all windows down function of key fob is used

  18. I’d rather have a driver info center that doesn’t randomly go blank, audio that works all the time, among a few other annoyances on my 2024 LTZ.

  19. Has anyone seen it actually work since doing the update? I have completed the OTA update and for the last 2 weeks not had it turn the blower on with remote window down. I have not found ant setting related to the active cabin circulation either. Just curious. 25 Sierra AT4.
