With the recent unveiling of the new Xiao Yao architecture and the preview of the upcoming NEV vehicle range, Buick is redefining the Electra sub-brand’s approach to electrification.
General Motors’ main joint venture in China announced a completely new strategy for the Buick brand in China, revealing a new technical foundation developed locally in that country as well as a new approach for the Electra sub-brand for high-end new energy vehicles. As such, Buick is redefining the focus of the Electra vehicle family with a broader electrification strategy that will encompass all key segments of the Chinese market.
“With the launch of the new Electra sub-brand, Buick will further sharpen its focus on premium NEVs in China,” said the SAIC-GM joint venture in a statement. “In the next 12 months, Buick will launch six Electra NEV models based on the all-new Xiao Yao architecture. Within two years, Buick aims to cover all key price segments in the NEV market,” the company added.
Notably, SAIC-GM has relaunched Buick’s Electra sub-brand in China with a new Mandarin name corresponding to “至境” to better connect with local customers in the Asian country. Under the revamped Electra sub-brand, Buick says it will fully embrace electrification and focus on the high-end premium new energy vehicle market to enhance its competitiveness against Chinese brands.
This will entail redefining the Electra sub-brand’s current focus, shifting from a lineup dedicated exclusively to fully electric vehicles (BEVs) to a broader electrified range that will also encompass plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs). Furthermore, the shift in focus will see the Electra family include new body styles beyond crossovers, specifically sedans and MPVs.
In fact, alongside the announcement of the new Electra NEV sub-brand, Buick gave a preview of the first electrified vehicles in the Electra range that will be presented over the next 12 months in China, including three “precursor vehicles” in concept format: the Buick OMPV Concept, the Buick Electra-L Concept and a brand-new Buick Electra NEV Crossover. All will be launched starting this year with various levels of electrification under the Electra sub-brand.

ahhh the chinese buick… think sincere they should keep the brand only in china, its home
On the China home:
I disagree, but only for one reason. -They’ve already ruined the Cadillac marque here. They really need to keep something here. There’s not much left now besides oversized trucks.
Don’t even think about bringing it to the US. Don’t think it’s doing all that well anymore in China, either and a total waste of money. No surprise. It’s GM. More reason to raise US prices even more. Price yourself right into bankruptcy.
I have NOT read this article yet. I wanted to comment after reading the headline and now I will go read the article. With that said, let me guess.
This is another new-worthy article about yet more China only EV’s? Let’s see if I’m correct.
Yup. Nothing for the USA. Just more for China.
Buick is dead to me in the USA. They offer zero that I would want. The closest would be if I were forced back into an ICE vehicle, I would maybe consider the Envista. Maybe, but probably not. So sad to see where Buick is at now.
ICE vehicles will still be with us for a while, but there is a market for EVs in the United States. I say build the Electra sub-brand here, too. Definitely a sedan and an SUV. I know minivans (MPVs) aren’t considered cool, so maybe sell one as a Chevy. Nobody is clamoring for a new Terraza. Also, market a two-door, either as a Wildcat or a Riviera. Then Buick might be Buick again.
Where were all of you anti Asians back in the sixties, seventies, eighties, nineties , 2000’s?
I know, you were all buying Toyota,Honda, Mazda, Datsun/Nissan and dumping US brands. Now that China is producing high quality exports, ( and you know they do. That’s why you protest so much) you all say ” no China imports”. oh the hipocrasy of you all. Long live Buick.
CCP is a death cult. Slave labor. Stolen technology. The sawed off runts of the CCP are murders and thieves.
Money grubbing corporations or people who collaborate with them are pond scum and sewer rats.
Some us still want to drive cars and not CUV/SUV. Building one or two sedans in the U.S. might give Buick a chance to sell to customers like me. Buick’s built on the CT4/CT5 platform might be very successful. Cadillac could move to pure EV and leave Buick to take care of the gasoline powered sedan crowd.
