Big Block Chevy Spark Posts A 9-Second Quarter Mile: Video

The combination of a small car and a big engine gets to the very heart of hot rodding, and these days, custom builders can get pretty extreme with that tried-and-true formula. Now, we’re watching as a Chevy Spark blasts down the quarter mile in under 10 seconds thanks to a Big Block powerplant, as seen in the following 28-minute video.

Coming to us from the Cleetus McFarland YouTube channel, the video documents the team’s efforts to find the limits of what this mighty little hatchback can do when motivated by a plus-sized dose of V8 horsepower.

Nicknamed “Crouton,” this Chevy Spark has been extensively modified, with a massive 540 cubic-inch naturally aspirated Big Block V8 somehow stuffed into the nose to make for one absolutely wild subcompact. The video primarily focuses on the team’s efforts at the drag strip as they push the heavily modified Spark to see just how quickly it can cover the quarter mile.

Initially designed as a burnout car, Crouton is now equipped with slick tires and set up specifically for drag racing, with the goal of achieving a record-setting quarter-mile time for the Chevy Spark. During the first run, the Spark manages an impressive 10.18-second quarter-mile time at 137 mph, immediately setting a new record for the fastest Chevy Spark. However, the team is determined to push the car into the 9-second range, and to that end, fine-tune the car’s launch, traction, and power delivery.

Obviously, this thing is pretty far removed from what it was when it first rolled off the production line. Nevertheless, the exterior looks relatively close to what you’d expect from a Chevy Spark, albeit with rear-mounted racing slicks and a lowered stance. What’s more, the sound this thing makes when it pulls up to the line is pretty intimidating, to say the least.

  1. Get EPA and NHTSA out of the way so GM can build this sort of car. Sorry but the 1.2 liter originally in these thing takes all the fun out of it.

  3. It would be nice if the interior was finished off, and with some nice all season street tires. -A proper grocery getter in the least. One can never have enough power. -Just ask Jay.
