The GM Authority Take
Though it was not record-breaking like the luxury marque expected, Cadillac sales were in the green during Q1 2025 in the U.S year-over-year. But compared to the previous quarter, sales were actually down 7K units.
The refreshed Cadillac Escalade family led the marque in terms of sales volume, moving 13K units while posting the biggest increase at 39 percent.
The Cadillac CT4 small sedan, subcompact Cadillac XT4 crossover, and all-electric Cadillac Lyriq crossover were all in the red.
The refreshed compact Cadillac CT5 sedan followed with a 32 percent gain to 4K units.
The CT5’s smaller relative, the CT4, saw sales drop 30 percent for just 1K deliveries. These model lines include the “regular” CT4, sporty Cadillac CT4-V, and ultra high-performance Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing. For the CT5, these include the “regular” CT5, Cadillac CT5-V, and Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing. Notably, Cadillac is now the only GM brand to still offer sedans in the U.S. market.
The luxury marque’s utilities were a mixed lot. The regular-length Escalade and extended-length Cadillac Escalade ESV led the pack with 12,683 units. These figures includes the high-performance Cadillac Escalade-V and Cadillac Escalade-V ESV.
However, the subcompact Cadillac XT4 crossover saw sales slip two percent to 5K deliveries. The compact Cadillac XT5 crossover fared better, though sales were nearly flat for a one percent increase to 6K units; the XT5 was the second-best-selling Cadillac crossover after the Escalade. The three-row Cadillac XT6 posted a four percent bump to 5K units, just three more deliveries than the XT4.
Notably, all three crossovers are not long for this world. Production of the XT4 has already ended, and the XT5 and XT6 will not survive after the 2025 model year.
Cadillac now sells three all-electric models, with more on the way, as the Escalade is poised to be the brand’s only ICE nameplate by 2026.
The EVs currently offered as of Q1 2025 include the full-size Cadillac Escalade IQ, along with Cadillac’s first EV – the Lyriq. The subcompact Cadillac Optiq crossover joins the list this quarter, while the large three-row Cadillac Vistiq crossover has begun to arrive at dealer lots in early Q2.

TOTAL | +37.45% | 7,972 | 5,800 |
Cadillac EV sales totaled 8K units, with the Lyriq leading the way. However, it posted only half the sales volume as the previous quarter with 4K deliveries. The Escalade IQ moved 2K units and the Optiq posted roughly 2K sales. Deliveries of these two all-electric utilities were within 240 units of each other.

Comments
My local Cadillac dealer is trying very hard to move the EV’s. Called and even offered one for the weekend to try out. I’ve never had that happen before. Salesman said they are offering massive discounts on all in stock EV’s. I really wish Cadillac the best in their move to EV’s, but to replace my XT5 they no longer offer anything for me. I’ll sadly be moving to another luxury SUV brand.
I have a friend whose wife drives a Hyundai and he says every time she goes in for any service now, they really harass her about trading for an EV. It has gotten to the point that they’re now telling her they can’t get parts to fix her five year old vehicle so she’s going to have to trade it in soon. I understand Hyundai is really pushing dealers to move the EVs. As they say desperate times call for desperate measures.
I guess they will realize how bad this strategy was sometime later. Maybe 5-10 years down the line.
The EVs won’t sell here in Qatar…..
As for the other brands, they all have their issues….but offer hybrid options.
Looks like Optiq and the E-IQ are cannibalizing the Lyriq a bit on both ends.
Lyriq is now on track to sell 17,300 units annually. Although that’s down by over a quarter, I think it’s to be expected given that Cadillac decided to build five different electric crossovers that are now competing with one another.
I mean, they used to have XT4, XT5, XT6, Escalade.
Now they will have Optiq, Lyriq, Vistiq, Escalade.
Pretty common to offer a variety of size classes.
Projecting full year sales by multiplying first quarter sales by four is silly, since it is always the weakest sales quarter for cars. Similarly, the article talking about quarter over quarter drops is silly.
If you had done the same with the Lyriq last year, you would have projected 23,200 sales instead of the 28,402 they actually ended the year with. Year before that you would have projected 3,872 instead of 9,154.
There probably was some amount of demand erosion from the introduction of other EV models, but there will be a demand increase from the introduction of the V series trim (already showing up in inventory) and the thinning of the ICEV portfolio.
I know sedans are falling out of style, but it would be nice for GM to at least offer one EV sedan somewhere in there brands.
I get GM wants to reboot Cadillac again, for the umpteenth time, as a pure EV player but American just isn’t there yet. Cadillac China has XT redesigns and these vehicles sell well. CT 5 remains competitive.
Lyriq prompted people to take a new look at Cadillac but killing profitable models just doesn’t make sense especially when the margins are good.
Barra did this, too, with Malibu when the Chinese Buick LaCrosse was fit for a Bowtie rebadged and would have required little factory retooling. GM is like a melting ice cube getting smaller with each year. Tariffs will only make things worse considering Envision could have shared XT5’s assembly line.
Note that Toyota isn’t eliminating any vehicle in an effort to make an EV statement or exiting any profitable segment yo short-term stock price gain. Market share still matters especially when it drops due to cancelling profitable lines.
Pretty soon they’ll be calling General Motors Junior Motors lol
“GM is like a melting ice cube getting smaller with each year. ”
Yeah, look at these shrinking deliveries:
2021 2,218,228
2022 2,274,088
2023 2,594,698
2024 2,705,080
And disappearing revenue!
2021 $127.0B
2022 $156.7B
2023 $171.8B
2024 $187.4B
Encouraging numbers on the surface but when put in the context that 2021 – 2022 were very depressed years due to COVID and chip shortages then the volume increase thru 2024 is really just a recovery. Regarding the revenue increase… again very impressive at first glance except it is again related to the associated volume recovery as well as unusual price inflation in the car market. Most other car makers have similar performance if you isolate the same 4 years that you selected.
Funny how peeps who dump on GM can’t back up their opinions with data, which makes their posts just that, their own opinion…that ages badly.
Customers are buying the XT5 while it is still available. Not everyone wants an EV. Caddy out on the limb going all EV and not offering a hybrid or the Chinese version of the XT5 produced in the USA. My next purchase will not be a Cadillac unfortunately, but some type of hybrid vehicle that will gradually phase me into all EV if I’m still alive for that next purchase.
Statistically most people who buy an EV don’t buy a second one. Cadillacs recent numbers with EVs are the ‘guinea pig’ years. Once buyers get a taste of the impracticality and horrifying depreciation of owning one, they learn the lesson. Their planned business model going forward is unsustainable and will end in financial ruin.
People who buy an EV don’t need to buy another because the first one is so good, it will outlast the owners. Claire Ford’s only car, a Detroit Electric, is still driveable after over 120 years. Even Jay Leno has a few old EVs that are decades olfer than him, and they all run. EVs are EVerlasting!
I have driven a rental Chevy Equinox EV i
Florida this month and it was a great experience. I drove it to a Cadillac dealer at Highway #1 in Fort Lauderdale, and I saw a white Cadillac Optiq Sport model close up. It is a beautiful vehicle! I wish I could post the photo here. Go to a Cadillac dealer and see it!
GM had recorded profits last year. Their stick is up 50%.
I’m just glad to see the CT5 still getting some love. It really is the People’s champ of Caddy’s lineup.
