As is customary in the Asian country’s automotive industry, local authorities have just leaked the first images and technical specifications of the upcoming Buick GL8 Encasa in China.
China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has released SAIC-GM’s official future product statement for the upcoming Buick GL8 Encasa, an all-new electrified powertrain variant of Buick’s full-size MPV. With this action, Chinese authorities revealed the first images and specifications of the all-new GL8 Encasa MPV just ahead of the General Motors joint venture’s official announcement.
Notably, the first leaked images of the upcoming Buick GL8 Encasa reveal that the new MPV represents the production model of the Buick OMPV Concept MPV that SAIC-GM unveiled in September of last year as a preview of a future next-generation Buick GL8 New Energy Vehicle (NEV) it is developing for the Chinese market. Ultimately, this leak shows that the “Organic Mobile Private Villa” concept will be produced as the all-new GL8 Encasa.
Aesthetically, the upcoming Buick GL8 Encasa remains faithful to the concept vehicle that introduced a new interpretation of Buick’s Pure Design language for minivans, with a new, more organic and streamlined body proportion. The taller, more upright front end features a set of split Matrix LED headlights that debut a “grilleless” design with a single lower air intake. The rear features a traditional design with cutting-edge lights.
The automaker’s future product declaration spec sheet for the all-new Buick GL8 Encasa reveals that the next-generation MPV will be powered by a plug-in hybrid powertrain comprised of a 132 kW or 177-horsepower, turbocharged 1.5L engine and a 200 kW or 268-horsepower electric motor. The powertrain is fed by a new premium lithium iron phosphate battery pack from SAIC-GM.
The upcoming Buick GL8 Encasa has just leaked for the first time in China, with its global debut expected to occur this month at the 2025 Shanghai International Auto Show. Though leaked as a PHEV, the GL8 Encasa is also expected to be offered in an all-electric configuration, a first for the GL8 lineup. The name “Encasa” combines two Spanish words that mean “At home,” possibly for the new interior configuration.
Comments
Absolutely. Gross.
Oh, look Mom. A refrigerator with wheels.
And it’s melting….LOL
I’m glad they offer in white.
They should make the script in an appliance design to complete the look/theme.
I guess it’s better than the Hyundai Excel with a vinyl carriage roof, opera lamps and continental wheel that sat outside my apartment for months on end. Somebody stole mirrors and the continental wheel after awhile.
Don’t tell me they’re stuck with naming models “En—” in China, too! Since this can be PHEV or an electric vehicle, why wasn’t this called “Electra E-something”? This is designed for China and can stay there. For much more appealing designs of desirable future Buicks, Vince Burlapp recently imagined a Buick Estate Minivan and a Buick Electra Wagon.
More Buick crap made in China.
My only reaction to this is sadness.
I drive a GM/Chinese made 2023 Envision ST version. 2 liter turbo with 90 octane gas kicks butt. No quality issues yet.Nice ride.
I have the same. Love it! Still miss my LaCrosse.
Who cares!
First, yes, who cares, but secondly, I’m a GM guy through and through, and this is absolutely ugly!
it says: “….new premium lithium iron phosphate battery pack”. Do you not mean: lithium ion
A lithium iron phosphate battery is a type of lithium ion battery.
Please keep this POS in China and let it rot there.
The minivan part of this can stay in China.
However, that PHEV drivetrain has interesting specs, and I could be swayed to take a look if it was built and offered in stateside vehicles.
Everybody at GM should be ashamed and especially Michael Simcoe who is thankfully now gone. It sets a new low for ugly; even Celestiq is better.
It’s interesting how you can actually see the reigns of the Design Staff VPs just by looking at the products. Here’s to hoping things start looking better under Nesbit.
With tariffs in place, it’s safe to say this super-ugly vehicle will not be sold in America.
gm needs a minivan! The Buick is a good start!
