Upcoming Buick Electra NEV Crossover Prototype Revealed

During the official unveiling of the new Electra architecture and sub-brand, General Motors revealed the prototype of an upcoming Buick Electra NEV Crossover at the 2025 Buick Brand Day event in China.

The automaker’s best-selling American brand in China has surprisingly revealed a prototype of an upcoming Buick Electra NEV crossover, as one of two “precursor vehicles” in its new product lineup under the Electra sub-brand – which will now encompass not only fully electric models, but will expand to include electrified products in general. In fact, the Electra NEV crossover is expected to be unveiled within the next 12 months.

“By blending global legacy with local innovation, Buick is shaping a distinctive premium brand identity for the electric era,” said GM China in a statement. “Along with the launch of Xiao Yao and Electra, Buick revealed its NEV models to be introduced over the next 12 months, including its all-new Encasa flagship MPV and two precursor vehicles for the sedan and SUV segments respectively,” the company added.

Specifically, the upcoming Buick Electra NEV crossover will be one of the first three New Energy Vehicles based on the new Xiao Yao “super architecture” developed locally by the SAIC-GM joint venture for Buick’s entire upcoming product family, with every model receiving some form of electrification starting this year under the Electra sub-brand. While GM didn’t reveal any details, this compact crossover previews a future production model.

Aesthetically, the Buick Electra NEV Crossover adopts Buick’s next-generation Kinetic Sculpture design language debuted on the all-new Buick Electra GS Concept sedan – shown at the same event. It stands out with its dynamic, sculptural design, featuring Buick’s new interpretation of the front end, marked by a more prominent shark nose and the “Reverse Checkmark” lighting signature with laser-cut geometric patterns above the ultra-thin headlamps.

The upcoming Buick Electra NEV crossover based on this concept is expected to be unveiled sometime within the next year as one of the first three products in the brand’s upcoming electrified vehicle lineup in China. The Electra NEV crossover will apparently launch after the Electra Encasa MPV and the upcoming large sedan, which were initially previewed by the Buick OMPV Concept and Buick Electra-L Concept, respectively.

  • So I guess we can predict one of two things. Either if Buick refreshes the Envision it will look like the Electra NEV SUV or if they offer an electric SUV it will look like that. I don’t understand the word “precursor” unless they use that in place of “concept.”

    • No! This appears to be a China only platform, so unfortunately not Federalized. Also, China sanctions will probably doom Envision import unless waiver is obtained.
Because of the Uighurs, Chinese products aren't very ethical.
Nonetheless, tiny brands like Buick and Cadillac thrive when selling world cars built on one assembly line. This line up could steal Tesla market share, especially if sold in EU, and save Buick China. SAIC makes good EVs including MG UK which is growing.

  • There was nothing at the Shanghai Auto Show revealed that was remotely attractive, including these bombs.

    • indeed not saw anyone posting a list of photos to see all, but the few saw .. there was really nothing interesting, all equal chinese cars with lot of electronics pimped ... really saw no elegant style... the mercedes vision v with a deep fish d e a d fish with open mouth is for someone do not know where driver takes the tv set do not let see and be confident, the bmw is a game car cheap, those chineseses is chinese

      • MK, the sedan and SUV are elegant. If these models were Detroit offerings you'd likely feel differently. A big step up for Buick, sleeker than Cadillac, guarenteed to appear to younger buyers

        • which sedan ? here there is only a coupê, a SUV and a Van all not elegant but as u said cheap plastics to young new generations

    • I LOVE the sedan and CUV. Sedan looks like a Cadillac CT5 and Mazda mash up. Perfect Regal/Insignia successor! Moments like this remind me how short sighted the Opel sale was.

The minivan looks like a 90s Pontiac Trans Sport/Lumina with the raked wind shield.

    • I love the sedan and CUV. The crossover looks very Mazda.these two vehicles would sell well in US.
China designs impressive cars. A lot better than most bland vehicles on US roads.
I think you are jealous of Chinese ability because they are a huge rival. Because of the Uighurs no one should buy Chinese but GM should design like this here

  • tried to find out "the most beautiful car of 2025 shanghai auto show" ... saw many photo but found nothing a WOW nothing attractive, not really a "good elegant design" ... it is only lot of plastics put whatever... it is much tech show, but became neutral... it did not push me out of sofa... if today should have to buy a car for us, really do not know what to do, to have a transport, as we do not plan to change the car we have, so we skip what industry does

  • The problem is the majority of americans will not buy them sourced from China. So they better build them at least in NA if they plan to sell them here.
