Unsold Tesla Cybertruck Inventory Is Piling Up

The Tesla Cybertruck is losing traction fast as unsold units continue to pile up.

Now roughly 18 months into production, the EV maker is sitting on an estimated $200 million worth of unsold Cybertruck inventory in the U.S., or roughly 2,400 units, per a report from electrek. The sluggish sales performance follows a series of high-profile recalls and technical issues as broader Tesla sales continue to drop.

Tesla previously explained away low Cybertruck sales as limited by production and high initial prices, factors which are no longer applicable. Just last month, Tesla Cybertruck deliveries were paused to address an issue with a trim piece that could detach while driving. While the issue was resolved for newly assembled vehicles as of March 21st, existing units still require a fix before delivery. Last year, Tesla issued a separate safety recall to address a stuck throttle pedal.

Tesla is now refusing to take Cybertruck units as trade-ins, and some customers have been forced to go through Lemon Law statutes after the automaker refused to take back vehicles sitting in service for an extended period of time. Simultaneously, resale values are cratering, with used Cybertruck prices dropping 55 percent year-over-year, including a 13-percent drop over the past three months and 6-percent drop in the last 30 days alone.

Many used car retailers are steering clear of the Cybertruck entirely, citing extreme depreciation and market instability. Looking ahead, Tesla is expected to introduce price cuts, especially for its Foundation Series Cybertrucks. A more affordable rear-wheel-drive (RWD) model is reportedly on the way, which could attract a broader customer base, but will likely undercut prices even further.

Meanwhile, sales for GM’s rival models, including the Chevy Silverado EV, GMC Sierra EV, and GMC Hummer EV Pickup, are somewhat lackluster as well. Through the first three months of the year, GM sold 2,393 units of the Chevy Silverado EV, 1,249 units of the GMC Sierra EV, and 3,479 units of the GMC Hummer EV (includes both the Pickup and SUV body style).

    1. Yeah. Poor Elon. Even after all the money he’s lost, he’s still better off than all the Federal workers who got fired for no reason! I feel so sorry for the guy (NOT!).

USA 0.1 — Oh, you mean all those people that had to go through the rigorous USAJOBS selection process, then rounds of interviews, most likely background checks, and were training in crappy-paying jobs so other people could retire without upsetting the government services that most people rely on but have no idea they exist? Yep, it’s better to just shut it all down and lose the decades upon decades of knowledge required to run all the agencies you’re going to be crying about not being there for the next 4 years — all with barely any impact to the federal budget.

    2. Before the Musk was political, there were stories after news reports about Teslas being keyed by MAGA’s. Pick up truck bros would roll coal at them and park and block charging stations.

      1. So first I doubt your a Rev, second of all I just googled your statement couldn’t find anything. There might have been a few who blocked charges. However nobody was keying them, blowing the charges and cars and trying to do it to the show rooms….this is been all done by the left. Not a tesla fan, not a toyota fan, not a honda fan, but I don’t go and key them or blow them up.

Almost like EVs don’t work for and/or aren’t wanted by everyone. Weird, if only someone saw this coming, BILLIONS of dollars could have been saved.

    1. OR, most people just don’t have over $100K to plop down on something guaranteed to depreciate 50% in the first year. If I were considering a truck (had them in the past, but not for a long time), I would certainly prefer a Sierra EV but there’s no way I (or anyone I know) could afford a workhorse for that much. Like any new technology, it takes a few years of people that can afford the expensive new tech before the prices can start to come down. It’s a pretty good indicator that the Equinox EV can be purchased for such a reasonable amount that about anyone can afford, so the benefits of volume production should start making its way into the larger vehicles before too long (after all the tariff BS goes away).

This should have been factored into the decision making process at companies like gm. But their bankers/shareholders demanded an agenda from them and thought they could force it on everyone because they own/control a little over half the S&P 500 market cap.

      2. We have a Silverado EV at work. The money saved on fuel over the truck it replaced is larger than the paynents on the truck. It is working out so well that the rest of the fleet will be electric within 2 years.

        1. That sounds like an environment that EV vehicles were designed for. The Cybertruck is so butt-ugly, and expensive, I’m surprised that anybody bought one in the first place.

          Reply
          1. Yes, it is perfect for our use. The big battery version can get through a whole day on a charge. The Cybertruck woukd not have been able to. Time wasted charging would have wiped out any fuel saving. But the Silverado finishes a typical day with 25-30% charge left. Plug it in overnight and it is ready to go again next day.

  20. Maybe the Cybertruck is just too weird or maybe folks don’t want electric trucks at all. GM can’t sell theirs either and they’re not weird. I’ve always thought that the type of person that buys trucks is the polar opposite of the type person who buys EVs. There’s really very little overlap so I never understood, and still don’t, why GM was planning on building 600,000 EV pickup trucks annually.

  21. Cyber Trucks are cool looking and cannot be confused with a common work truck. In my WLA neighborhood, many Escalades like mine are being replaced with Cyber Trucks. On the other hand, Tesla sedans are popular here with the liberals, and they are all being traded in for german, Japanese or Korean battery powered cars. No GM battery powered cars in sight.

      1. David, using your words for the search, I found one MSN story where a TESLA was keyed by a lobbyist. This had nothing to do with it being a Tesla as it was a personal vendetta and any brand car that the victim owned would have been keyed. Of course, the lobbyist is facing the consequences as he should. I don’t think you and Charlie look very good offering this one incident as ” there were stories after news reports about Teslas being keyed by MAGA’s”.
