U.S. Senator Seeking To Prevent Connected Chinese Cars From Entering The Country

Democrat U.S. Senator Elissa Slotkin of Michigan has introduced her first bill, entitled the Connected Vehicle National Security Review Act. According to The Detroit News, its intention is to block Chinese cars from entering the United States, citing concerns about privacy and national security.

If passed into law, the bill would establish a national security review process for Chinese cars with internet connections, which applies to pretty much all new cars. It also targets automotive components made by companies from China and other geopolitical adversaries of the U.S.

“I will lay down on the border to keep Chinese vehicles from entering the U.S. market. This is my first bill I’m introducing in the Senate, and it’s for a reason,” Slotkin said in a statement.

“Chinese vehicles could collect huge amounts of data on America and Americans, which poses a significant national security threat. Americans’ personal data, our infrastructure, Michigan’s auto industry, and auto jobs are all at stake,” Slotkin said.

She continued: “Chinese vehicles, which are dirt cheap thanks to state subsidies, could collect full motion video of sensitive sites, 3-D mapping, and geolocation of individual drivers – all of which could be sent back to Beijing. Despite the polarization in Washington right now, protecting U.S. citizens should be nonpartisan, and I look forward to working in a bipartisan fashion to pass this legislation into law.”

The only GM model this would impact is the Buick Envision. The premium compact crossover is built exclusively at the GM-SAIC Jinqiao Plant in China. Although built in China, it’s equipped with GM-designed electronic architecture.

The new tariffs imposed by the Trump administration haven’t changed the Buick Envision’s MSRP, but they’re surely impacting the cost of importing it from China to the States. Tariffs and new laws targeting Chinese imports could cause a disruption in availability and a future change to where it’s built, or it could be discontinued entirely in the States.

  1. I am thinking that China is not our enemy. The enemy is Trump and not obeying court orders. He is the biggest threat to our democracy. He attacks our Judges and incited J/6. He is guilty of treason. China is just a convenient scapegoat. A bogey man. The stranger danger. They are in fact brilliant. Their first retaliatory tariff was 34%. He has 34 felony convictions

  2. She is a senator from Michigan, but I’ll take it. No one had a problem with this when we just built in China because it was cheaper.

  3. Dear Misses Slotkin, I am very surprised(sad) that a DEMOCRAT senator, specially from THE AUTOMOBILE STATE OF MICHIGAN propose such a non-sense, but would have expected such a proposal be made by a TTTT(trumpy-trump-tarriffs-tumult(chaos) brainwatched REPUBLICAIN. 1- What about the MUSK’S goons who wants to have access to your INCOME TAXE RECORDS???helloooo. 2-What will happens to US made vehicles with CHINESE SEMI-CONDUCTORS and or components?? WILL THEY BE GROUNDED IN THEIR OWN DRIVEWAY??? Hellooooo 3- Michigan lost automobile jobs because they were out of the market with benefits, salaries ect. Manufacturers had to move their production where vehicles could be built at a price that the average consumer could afford like the dream of Henry Ford with the model T. And by the way, he succeeded. And TTTT becoming more and more lunatic

  4. It seems to me she may be concerned with manufacturers like BYD, Chery, and the like when she comments about “dirt cheap” cars.

Guessing she is completely unaware of specific models like the Envision from an American company that operates in her own backyard.

That being said, hope she has a plan to address current owners of these vehicles to prevent them from becoming a brick.

  5. Is she related to the moron known as Mr. Slotkin that is Trump’s main economic advisor? Regardless, the Envision never should have been imported from China and many of the blue hairs that buy them are clueless about it. IF they found out, uh oh…

    1. We need to come to the realization that America from sea to shining sea is just one big shopping mall. That’s not horrible. Retail is king. It employs millions and millions of related jobs. We make money on Chinese stuff. How many people out their kids through school delivering, distributing, advertising, designing and finally selling Hot Wheels or Babies or a mush millow pillow? We mint money from China.

      1. I knew a lot of Big Three workers who put (sometimes multiple) kids through college. I know of absolutely nobody who put their kids through college who worked at Amazon or Wal Mart. BTW, there was plenty of money-probably more money- to be made “delivering, distributing, advertising, designing” US made manufactured goods.

  6. What exactly is this bizarre paranoia about the Envision?? What info can they actually get from my car? Where I drove (who cares) or what my Spotify playlist is? I just don’t see what’s the real concern here. I think my iPhone and Alexa have more info on me than my car!
