MSN reports that President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that auto tariffs on Canada could increase higher than the 25-percent rate imposed earlier this month. The state of tariffs right now places a 25-percent duty on cars imported to the U.S. with some temporary exemptions for USMCA-compliant models. Additionally a 25-percent tariff on auto parts is set to kick in no later than May 3rd, 2025, again, with temporary exemptions related to the USMCA.
“I put tariffs on Canada, they are paying 25 percent but that could go up in terms of cars,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. “When we put tariffs on, all we are doing is we are saying, ‘We don’t want your cars, in all due respect.'”
Trump went on to claim that Canada was taking business and jobs in the automotive sector away from the United States and that Canada shouldn’t be involved in the U.S. car business. However, the North American neighbors have been deeply integrated in the car industry for decades, and it’s commonplace for components to cross the border multiple times between a car being manufactured and arriving on a dealer lot.
In the same audience with the press on Wednesday, Trump spoke of his discussions with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney while declining to comment on Canada’s federal election next week. “[Carney] was very, very nice, I will say. We had a couple very nice conversations, very good,” Trump said. “But I don’t think it’s appropriate for me to get involved in their election.” Trump added that he’s “working well with Canada” while repeating his call for the country to become America’s 51st state. “We’re doing very well,” Trump said. “We are working on a deal. We will see what happens.”
Canada responded to President Trump’s controversial trade policies with retaliatory tariffs of its own on cars imported from the United States, which shakes out to 21.25 percent on the majority of U.S.-built cars. However, shortly thereafter, Canada softened its new car tariff with an exemption for American automakers if they continue to invest in Canadian manufacturing.
