Trump Lowers Reciprocal Import Tariffs On Some Countries, But Not For Cars

Following reports that dozens of countries have reached out to the White House to negotiate lower tariffs imposed on “Liberation Day,” President Donald Trump announced a 90-day pause on reciprocal tariffs on non-retaliating countries. The world awaits a definitive list of which countries are included in the three-month tariff deferral.

President Donald Trump.

“I have authorized a 90 day PAUSE, and a substantially lowered Reciprocal Tariff during this period, of 10%, also effective immediately,” Trump posted on social media. However, China, which retaliated with increased tariffs on the U.S., is one country that isn’t receiving tariff relief from President Trump. “Based on the lack of respect that China has shown to the World’s Markets, I am hereby raising the Tariff charged to China by the United States of America to 125%, effective immediately,” Trump said in a social media post on Wednesday.

This announcement specifically applies to reciprocal tariffs announced by Trump on April 2nd. The 25 percent tariff on cars imported to the United States is separate, and there’s been no word on its reversal. There are temporary exemptions in place for the 25 percent car tariff for vehicles compliant with the USMCA.

As it relates to GM, there were previously concerns about the 25 percent “Liberation Day” tariff on South Korea, in addition to the 25 percent car tariff. GM imports all of its USDM subcompact crossovers (Chevy Trax, Chevy Trailblazer, Buick Envista, Buick Encore GX) from Korea, which would significantly add to the cost of importing these affordably priced vehicles. The increased tariff on China threatens the viability of marketing the Chinese-built Buick Envision in the States.

Other consequences of President Trump’s threatened and imposed tariffs include paused production at automotive and parts facilities across North America, a boost in truck production at the GM Fort Wayne assembly plant in Indiana, and increased U.S. manufacturing investments from some overseas automakers like Honda and Hyundai.

    1. This is an example of pure cope by Joey D, even he’s wondering WTF is the end game at this point.

It’s blatantly becoming apparent that this has turned into a short/pump and dump and instead of being outraged of the massive wealth transfer that’s occurred now THREE times the last month, he has to cope by blaming liberals and making fun of the outrage. Truly pathetic.

  7. Again, Farley, Tavares -and especially Barra- have nobody to blame but themselves. They were gaslighting the American public by importing more vehicles and parts hoping they would not notice and now it’s biting them in the ass. GM was especially agreviois using funds to artificially prop up their stock that instead could have been used for new product and keep production in the US.

Even now, all this could be settled in a day with phone calls from the Detroit automakers pledging to build 75 percent of their sales volume within the United States with an average of 50 percent US content across the entire lineup domestic or imported.

    1. Tigger, the dumbest MAGA moron on GMA, and that is quite an achievement. Get ready for your $40,000 Trax and $90,000 base Silverado, all made in the USA by lazy, fat old 300 pound white guys with diabetes and heart disease.

      2. Ok my anti-American friend. We already have $40,000 base price Chevy EVs coming out of Mexico built with slave labor and $90,000 Base price Silverado EVs. BTW perhaps you should not eat or drink because the fast food you live on and lattes you guzzle are made in the USA. Speaking of lazy, fat, old workers who build our vehicles in this country, at least at the end of the day they created something. What the hell do you contribute to the economy? Now be a good little wokester and study your pronouns and come back when you have something meaningful to contribute to GMA.

        1. GM lost money on every Malibu they sold. Why do you think they discontinued it? Almost no entry level vehicles are made in the US or other high wage countries because it is just too expensive.

Did not come up with a big beautiful health care plan to replace the ACA. It was not the Democrats fault! The orange wife cheater had a republican house and a republican senate. Just like all school yard bullies he flinched on his favorite word, TARIFFS! What state do you live in because my tax dollars go to poor red states to subsidize them and I would like to see that end.
