Trans Am Worldwide To Showcase 70/SS Chevelle Super Sport At NYIAS

A reimagined lineup of one of GM’s most iconic muscle cars will debut at next week’s New York International Auto Show. Trans Am Worldwide, the firm responsible for the unofficial Trans Am versions of modern Camaros, has developed what it calls the 70/SS, a fresh new take on the classic 1970 Chevy Chevelle.

The 70/SS comes in three distinct variants: Base, 396 Heritage, and 454 LS6X Limited Edition. The base model is powered by a 6.2L V8 LT1, which powered the C7 Corvette Stingray and the fifth- and sixth-generation Chevy Camaro SS. It’s a modern V8 that’s claimed to have the same horsepower rating as the 1970 LS6 454 Chevelle: 450 horsepower. It’s available with an automatic or manual transmission.

It’s underpinned by GM’s Alpha platform, just like Trans Am Worldwide’s famous Trans Am creations. Under the skin, there are lowering springs, an upgraded sway bar, a custom axle-back exhaust system, and custom-painted brake calipers. It rides on the owner’s choice of Mach V or traditional rally wheels wrapped in Michelin Super Sport tires.

A fully fabricated carbon fiber body is intended to be a modern take on the classic Chevelle. It’s six inches wider and 14 inches longer than a sixth-gen Camaro to mimic the size of an A-body Chevelle more accurately. It’s available as a coupe or convertible.

Inside, there’s “70/SS” embroidery, a retro leather seat package, retro gauge clusters, a custom steering wheel, custom door panel inserts, and floor mats.

The base model is upgradeable with a Magnuson 2650 supercharger tuned to 675 horsepower with headers and a full exhaust system or 800 horsepower, adding a unique fuel system and cam package.

The 396 Heritage model turns up the performance with a standard 402ci engine, likely a bored-out version of an aftermarket 396 V8 crate engine. The aforementioned supercharger makes a claimed 800 horsepower at the wheels. The 454 LS6X model is limited to 25 units, and it’s available in three turbo V8 tunings ranging from 900 to 1,000 to 1,500 wheel horsepower.

  1. Wow! Just WOW!! That should be put into production, and of course used as Chevy’s new entrant into the NASCAR Cup Series!

  3. Unfortunately GM has given up on performance cars except the Corvette. They have abandoned the muscle car customer for the SUV.Its very disappointing not to be able to buy a Camaro or a Chevelle or even a Nova in 2 door or convertible. They have abandoned the car market and it’s all about the profit margins not customer wants!😩😭

    1. Correction: Customers have abandoned the car segment. Take a look at CT4 and CT5 sales despite being fabulous products.

      1. I agree, the younger generations don’t look at cars like we did, they don’t care about them.

  4. A reminder of the days gone by when GM controlled nearly 60% of the U.S. domestic market and individual car/engine divisions were run by autonomous “Car Guy” people. Yes, the auto market has changed dramatically and some industry analysts actually foretold of the day when CUV/SUV’s would make up most of the customer demand. It’s a real shame that GM has not been able to infuse their current vehicles with the level of driving excitement (Exception = Corvette) that they offered in the days of the GTO, 442, various Chevy SS models, and Buick GranSports.

  5. This has been out for quite some time. How can they continue to get alpha platforms and especially the Camaro based interior since Camaro has been dropped? It still looks like a Gen 6 Camaro on the side body lines & especially the interior. Also, check out the retail prices which are beyond many C8 Corvette prices.

  6. Forgot Alpha platform still in production for Cadillac CT4 & CT5. Dash and door panels all Gen 6 Camaro. Their version of the Pontiac Trans AM & Formula looked just like a Gen 6 Camaro with a Pontiac front facia & rear. Also super expensive. Also offered a ‘70 “GTO”, similar styling but looked shrunken.

  7. Funny, we comment on this but none of us can or will buy one of these cars. So, since we’re all blow’n smoke, this design suffers from what ailed the Camera….. it suffers from what looks like a chop top custom car from the 50’s. This article brings out the passion we have for cars that are not generic mundane vehicles of which there are few of.

  8. Gorgeous work–but now they’re done. GM wizards dropped the Camaro, yet Ford knows how to sell the mustang. I guess there isn’t a market for pony cars according to GM. Go figure.

  9. GM dropped the car segment for SUV ?? 2 fold. Customers haven’t bought alot and at $70k a pop, “car kids” can’t afford them, so GM goes after the “parent segment” who can afford them. 2nd is that GM is not run by “car guys”. Look at history of GM..Look at sales based on the CEO’s. Car guys–not bean counters made cars and marketed cars people wanted and developed a market AND found a way to make money at it.. “NON-CAR GUYS” (bean counters and current management) look at profit – that’s why they have so many plants outside America and are stuffing SUV’s & EV’s down our throats. They don’t develop the market for car customers – they mandate the market and TELL US what we will be driving. The only fight back is NOT buy their $100k SUV’s and move to another brand.
