Redesigned 2026 Subaru Outback Revealed As Chevy Blazer Rival

Subaru just pulled the sheets on the all-new, seventh-generation Outback, showing off an updated design, improved capability, and advanced technology. Offering a combination of practicality and a range of off-road-friendly features, the new 2026 Subaru Outback also includes the debut of the new 2026 Outback Wilderness, framed as a trail-ready SUV with 9.5 inches of ground clearance. At present, GM offers the Chevy Blazer in the two-row midsize crossover segment, however, production of the ICE-based Blazer is currently expected to end after the 2025 model year.

In terms of exterior design, the new 2026 Subaru Outback presents a new front fascia with a more upright layout, plus plenty of scratch-resistant cladding around the perimeter. The Wilderness variant takes it a step further with more aggressive off-roader cues, such as exclusive matte black trim, copper-colored accents, and round LED fog lights. The Outback is equipped as standard with roof rails with improved tie-down points.

Inside, the new Outback showcases a modernized interior with a 12.1-inch touchscreen and 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. Options include Nappa leather and ventilated front seats. There’s also increased cargo space, up to 34.6 cubic feet, a two-cubic-feet increase over the preceding model. The Wilderness offers rugged StarTex upholstery and a range of versatile cargo solutions, as well.

Under the hood, the standard-spec 2026 Subaru Outback is equipped with an updated 2.5L flat-four engine, which is rated at 180 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque. Meanwhile, XT and Wilderness variants cradle a turbocharged 2.4L flat-four engine rated at 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque. All trims run a Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system, plus a revised X-MODE system. The Wilderness further enhances off-road capability with upgraded suspension, 9.5 inches of ground clearance, and all-terrain tires. New electronically controlled dampers adapt in real time for a smoother ride over a variety of terrain.

Further highlights include the latest EyeSight safety tech suite, with features like Emergency Stop Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, and hands-free highway driving up to 85 mph.

The 2026 Subaru Outback will launch later this year, with pricing and further information expected closer to launch.

But CR rated Subaru at the top of the reliability list…

    1. That is true. GM has to many 6.2-liter V/8s blowing up to make the list.

  5. Not a vehicle I would buy, but why is Mary killing the ICE Blazer? This is another vehicle that has posted on this site as a competitor to the Blazer, but the Blazer is on the kill floor. Just doesn’t make sense to me to eliminate the Blazer. But I’m not making 29.5 million to make stupid decisions.

    1. Don’t worry, I doubt she will be there for another 10 years…..
Remember what happened to Carlos Tavares?
I feel something similar might happen….

      1. Those who downvoted, EXPLAIN YOURSELF.
I am NOT defending the brand, I was merely mentioning something.
So, EXPLAIN WHY there is downvote.

Let me make it clear, I am NO fan of Ms Mary. I hate her as much AS EVERYONE HERE DOES.

        1. Mary Barra is by far the best of the US 3 auto executives, maybe the best in the world. Tavares was awful, Farley is awful. GM has outperformed Ford and Stellantis in every way measurable over Barra’s tenure. Farley and many other blow hard male executives have convinced me of two things, no ex jocks for any company executives, and no wanna be race car drivers as auto executives, they are usually terrible.

      2. Ramaswamy,

GM has always had a mandatory retirement age of 65; I assume the policy is still in place. Many good people from GM have had to step down because of it.

Mary Barra turns 65 on Christmas Eve next year so she likely only has 18 months left. When she took over as CEO, I liked her but now it’ll be a great Christmas gift next year to see her heading out the gate for the last time.

She’ll probably cluelessly amble out in one of those 9,400 pound “green” EVs that she built thinking she saved the world. I think history will judge her as the second coming of Roger B. Smith.

  6. It’s ugly but it doesn’t have a 1.5L 4 cylinder and it sells.

    1. Subarus seem to make a quality product, and are usually highly rated, IMHO that is more the reason it sells, surely not my choice. the closet Subaru dealer for our area is about 250-300 miles away, depending on which direction you go, another reason I would never buy one.

    2. The GM 1.5 turbo is far, far better than the base 2.5L engine that 80% of these are sold with.

  9. Wow! Subaru took away the “wagon” look and I think it’s a mistake? Time will tell.
