Mailbag: Which GM Models Are Neither Hybrid Nor Electric?

GM continues to pursue its goal of fully electrifying its light-duty vehicle fleet by the 2035 timeframe, as company CEO Mary Barra confirmed at the end of the 2023 calendar year. That said, The General still offers a broad variety of ICE-based models without any form of electrically-driven powertrain whatsoever – in fact, the vast majority of The General’s U.S. lineup is made up of exactly that. Nevertheless, some readers may be wondering – which General Motors models are neither hybrid, nor electric?

Reader Jeremy K. reached out to ask us exactly that, and now, we’re answering with the following GM Authority Mailbag.

The Chevy Colorado, one of several ICE-only GM models.

Looking over the list of The General’s 2025-model-year ICE-only models, we find everything from crossovers, to pickups, to SUVs, to luxury vehicles, to sports cars, to sedans, to vans, and everything in between. In fact, the sheer number of ICE-only models that General Motors currently offers is a bit staggering:

Then we have the list of EVs, or battery-only electric vehicles. General Motors has gradually been building its portfolio of EV models over the past few years, with Cadillac leading the way with models like the Lyriq, Optiq, and Escalade IQ. Chevrolet has also gotten a slice of the EV action, offering up models like the Chevy Blazer EV, Equinox EV, and Silverado EV, not to mention the all-electric BrightDrop delivery van. Rounding it out, we have GMC, which offers the GMC Sierra EV pickup and outrageous GMC Hummer EV off-roader.

  • Cadillac Celestiq
  • Cadillac Escalade IQ
  • Cadillac Lyriq
  • Cadillac Optiq
  • Chevy Blazer EV
  • Chevy BrightDrop (400 and 600)
  • Chevy Equinox EV
  • Chevy Silverado EV
  • GMC Hummer EV (Pickup and SUV)
  • GMC Sierra EV

Finally, General Motors currently offers only a single hybrid model in the U.S., namely the Chevy Corvette E-Ray, which combines the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 LT2 gasoline engine from the C8 Corvette Stingray with a front-mounted electric motor, yielding a total of 655 horsepower and marking the very first production-spec, all-wheel-drive, hybrid-powered Corvette model ever created.

Looking ahead, General Motors has plans to expand its EV lineup for the 2026 model year, offering up the new Cadillac Escalade IQL, the high-performance Cadillac Lyriq-V, and the three-row Cadillac Vistiq, as well as the as-of-yet-unrevealed second-generation Chevy Bolt EV. GM is also expected to expand its hybrid offerings, announcing early last year that it will reintroduce PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) powertrains to the North American market as a way of bridging the gap between ICE-only vehicles and fully electric models. We could also mention the upcoming hybrid-powered C8 Corvette Zora hypercar.

Of course, General Motors also offers a variety of PHEV, MHEV (mild hybrid electric vehicle), BEV (battery electric vehicle) and HEV (hybrid electric vehicle) models through its various Chinese joint ventures (SAIC-GM, SAIC-GM-Wuling). And as for hybrid models and PHEV / EREV (extended range electric vehicle) models that GM has offered in the past, well, that’s a whole other list:

  • Buick LaCrosse eAssist (mild hybrid)
  • Cadillac ELR
  • Cadillac Escalade Hybrid
  • Chevy Volt
  • Chevy Malibu eAssist (mild hybrid) and Malibu Hybrid
  • Chevy Silverado 1500 Hybrid
  • Chevy Tahoe Hybrid
  • GMC Sierra 1500 Hybrid
  • GMC Yukon Hybrid
