Here’s How Much The 2025 GMC Savana Can Tow

Finishing up the third decade of the perennially popular commercial van design from GM, the 2025 GMC Savana gets only a few minor updates and changes as The General avoids meddling with a successful formula. GM Authority is looking closely at the 2025 GMC Savana towing capacities with this post.

As for the mechanical background that enables the vehicle to tow, the 2025 GMC Savana is powered with a pair of engine options, of which the naturally aspirated 4.3L V6 LV1 gasoline engine rated at 276 horsepower and 298 pound-feet of torque is standard.

The naturally aspirated 6.6L V8 L8T gasoline engine, which provides output of 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque, is offered as an option. Cog swaps are handled by the GM eight-speed automatic transmission for the V6 engine, while a heavy-duty version of the same eight-speed is equipped with the V8 powerplant. The van has a single drivetrain, namely RWD.

Axle ratio is 3.42 for all engine and wheelbase configurations of the 2025 GMC Savana.

With the foundation of engine details established for the 2025 Savana, here are the full towing stats for the nameplate:

Towing capacity is 6,300 pounds with an extended wheelbase or 6,700 pounds with the regular wheelbase for the 2025 GMC Savana Passenger Van powered by the V6 engine, as the table reveals. The GMC Savana Cargo 2500 or Cargo 3500 configured with an extended wheelbase can tow 7,100 pounds and 7,200 pounds respectively. Finally, the regular-wheelbase V6 Express Cargo can tow 4,500 pounds.

Top towing capacity rises to 9,200 pounds (extended wheelbase) or 9,600 pounds (regular wheelbase) when the V8 engine is cradled under the hood of the Savana Passenger Van. A maximum towing capacity of 10,000 pounds or 4,546 kilograms is achieved by all Cargo variants motivated by the V8 engine.

The GMC Savana user manual contains ample recommendations on towing successfully and safely with the van. For an additional break-in period of 500 miles of driving, the Savana shouldn’t be used to tow at all. Hauling a trailer could result in damage to the engine or other vehicle components.

After this initial period an oil change is suggested, especially if “heavy towing” is intended. The 2025 GMC Savana should then be driven at 50 mph or less for the first 500 miles of towing as a secondary break-in period, avoiding full-throttle starts.

The advanced driver assistance system or ADAS features listed below, if equipped on the Savana, should be deactivated for towing:

The GMT 610 platform provides the bones for the GMC Savana in its latest model year as well. Production of most variants is carried out at the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri, while the Savana Cutaway rolls off the Navistar assembly line at a separate Ohio plant, too.

  • Article might as well read, "1996 G van, here's what it will tow." The G van is a less than bold statement to the mediocrity inside GM management.. It's an embarrassment to the entire company and there's no excuse for this product to still being in the portfolio.

  • These vans are bullet proof. We towed a 24 foot enclosed trailer loaded with race cars, Ferrari’s tools extra tires , and 6 people plus their luggage accross the country to most all road racing tracks in the USA. We have the stock 350. Engine with huge coolers on the engine and transmission. Van has 160k miles, over 100k towing , engine doesn’t leak or burn oil. These are AMAZING vans

  • Hey Marty, do you own one of these vans or do you just read about them. They are a proven design .

  • There is no difference between the Savanna and the Chevy Express. A number of years I bought Buick at a dealership that also sold GMC pickups and vans. A new Savanna had just came in and was in the readying area. I took a peek inside the back doors and laying on the cargo floor were some boxes that said GMC TRIM KIT. I realized there was no difference except the window sticker. It was priced higher.
