Here’s How Much The 2025 Chevy Express Can Tow

The 2025 Chevy Express continues one of GM’s most successful designs into its 30th model year with very few updates, continuing to offer Cargo, Cutaway and Passenger variants for a wide range of commercial fleet customers. Now, here are the details on 2025 Chevy Express towing capabilities.

Looking first at the greasy bits that provide the power for towing, the 2025 Chevy Express cradles one of two powerplant choices under the hood. Equipped as standard is the naturally aspirated 4.3L V6 LV1 gasoline engine developing 276 horsepower and 298 pound-feet of torque.

Optionally available is the naturally aspirated 6.6L V8 L8T gasoline engine cranking out 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque. The V6 powerplant is mated to the GM eight-speed automatic transmission, while the V8 is paired with a heavy-duty variant of the same transmission. All 2025 Chevy Express vans feature a rear-wheel drivetrain.

Regardless of configuration, the Express is fitted with a 3.42 axle ratio.

Now that we’ve detailed the power source for the Chevy Express towing capacity, here are the full details of how much the 2025 model year van can tow:

As can be seen from the chart, the V6 engine gives the 2025 Chevy Express Passenger a towing capacity of 6,300 pounds with an extended wheelbase or 6,700 pounds with the regular wheelbase. This rises to 7,100 pounds or 7,200 pounds for the Chevy Express Cargo 2500 or Cargo 3500 with extended wheelbase and 7,400 pounds for the Express Cargo with a regular wheelbase.

The V8 engine boosts maximum towing weight to 9,200 pounds or 9,600 pounds for the extended and regular wheelbases of the 2025 Chevy Express Passenger. For the Cargo Van equipped with the V8, the Express achieves its highest towing capacity, with 10,000 pounds or 4,546 kilograms across the board.

GM has extensive advice about towing with the Chevy Express that can be found in the user manual. The van shouldn’t be used for towing when new until after being driven for 500 miles, providing a break-in period. Towing sooner can cause damage to the engine, axles, or other components.

Furthermore, once towing begins, it should be limited to a top speed of 50 miles per hour, with avoidance of full-acceleration starts, until total towing distance adds up to 500 miles. An oil change should be carried out before “heavy towing” begins.

The following list of ADAS (advanced driver assistance system) features, if present, should be deactivated while towing:

The Express continues to ride on the GMT 610 platform, which also underpins the GMC Savana. Production is carried out at the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri with the Express Cutaway also produced at a different facility in Ohio by Navistar .
